God is to be praised by blessing His name. This is mentioned 30 times in the Psalms. We are exhorted to “exalt his name” (Ps. 34:3), “make his name to be remembered” (Ps. 45:17), “sing forth the honour of his name” (Ps. 68:2), “love his name” (Ps. 69:36), “sing praises to his name” (Ps. 68:4), “bless his name” (Ps. 100:4), “declare the name of the LORD” (Ps. 102:21), “call upon his name” (Ps. 105:1), “give thanks unto thy holy name” (Ps. 106:47), and “glory ye in his holy name” (Ps. 105:3). God’s name is holy, different from and higher than all other names. It is “reverend” (Ps. 111:9). It “alone is excellent” (Ps. 148:13).
God’s names are the revelation of His character: Jehovah, Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Nissi, Jehovah Shalom, Jehovah Tsidkenu, Jehovah Saba, Jehovah Sham, Elohiym, El Gibbor, Adonai, Shaddai, I Am That I Am, the Lord of glory, the God of heaven, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, God of the spirits of all flesh, God of gods, God of the whole earth, God of all flesh, God of truth, God of recompences, God of Israel, God of Jerusalem, God of David, God of Daniel, God of the holy prophets, God of glory, Rock, Refuge, High Tower, Shield, Strength, Fortress, Deliverer, Horn of my salvation, the First and the Last, Alpha and Omega, God of my strength, God of my righteousness, God of my mercy, God of patience and consolation, God of hope, God of peace, God of all comfort, God of love, God of all grace, God of my praise, Saviour, Good Shepherd, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Everlasting Father, Father of lights, Father of glory, Father of all, Father of spirits, Wonderful, Counsellor, Prince of Peace, Jesus!
Rabbinical Jews who follow the Talmud do not write or speak God’s name, claiming that it is too revered to use among men. They replace God’s name with “Hashem,” which means “the name.” It, therefore, means nothing. This is a false piety based on human tradition rather than God’s Word. God gave His name to be known and used.
In this present world, God’s high and holy name is used in vain; it is used in cursing; it is treated as a thing of no consequence.
In Christ’s kingdom, the entire earth will bless the holy name of Jesus, “a name which is above every name” (Php. 2:9)!
