Henry Van Dyke

Henry Van Dyke

“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” was a poem written by Henry Van Dyke in 1907. He was a Presbyterian minister and an English professor at Princeton University. A personal friend of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, Van Dyke served in civil posts in the Netherlands and Luxembourg. He wrote this poem while staying as a guest preacher at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He said he was inspired by the Berkshire mountains. When he handed it to the college president, he said it should be sung to Beethoven’s “Hymn to Joy” from the last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Van Dyke said the hymn “may be sung together by people who know the thought of the age, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy religion, or any revolution on earth overthrow the kingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust and joy and hope.”

It is a hymn of praise sung directly to the Lord.

The hymn does not describe redemption through Christ’s blood. Either Van Dyke left this out because he believed in universal salvation, or he merely assumed personal redemption without stating it. Either way, the hymn is weaker for this omission. We must analyze every hymn, testing it with Scripture (1 Th. 5:21), so that we avoid error and sing with proper understanding. “... sing ye praises with understanding” (Ps. 47:7).

It is reminiscent of Psalm 66:1, “Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands:”

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee
God of glory, Lord of love
Hearts unfold like flow'rs before Thee
Op'ning to the Sun above
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness
drive the dark of doubt away
Giver of immortal gladness
fill us with the light of day

All Thy works with joy surround Thee
Earth and heav'n reflect Thy rays
Stars and angels sing around Thee
center of unbroken praise
Field and forest, vale and mountain
Flow'ry meadow, flashing sea
chanting bird and flowing fountain
call us to rejoice in Thee

Thou art giving and forgiving
ever blessing, ever blest
well-spring of the joy of living
ocean-depth of happy rest
Thou the Father, Christ our Brother
all who live in love are Thine
Teach us how to love each other
lift us to the Joy Divine

Mortals join the mighty chorus
which the morning stars began
Father-love is reigning o'er us
brother-love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward
victors in the midst of strife
joyful music lifts us sunward
in the triumph song of life

Sharing Policy: Much of our material is available for free, such as the hundreds of articles at the Way of Life web site. Other items we sell to help fund our expensive literature and foreign church planting ministries. Way of Life's content falls into two categories: sharable and non-sharable. Things that we encourage you to share include the audio sermons, O Timothy magazine, FBIS articles, and the free eVideos and free eBooks. You are welcome to make copies of these at your own expense and share them with friends and family. You may also post parts of reports and/or entire reports to websites, blogs, etc as long as you give proper credit (citation). A link to the original report is very much appreciated as the reports are frequently updated and/or expanded. Things we do not want copied and distributed are "Store" items like the Fundamental Baptist Digital Library, print editions of our books, electronic editions of the books that we sell, the videos that we sell, etc. The items have taken years to produce at enormous expense in time and money, and we use the income from sales to help fund the ministry. We trust that your Christian honesty will preserve the integrity of this policy. "For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward" (1 Timothy 5:18). Questions? support@wayoflife.org
