SPURGEON COLLEGE CLOSES DOORS (Friday Church News Notes, February 6, 2026, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Spurgeon College of London, England, closed its doors in July 2025, only two years after Rick Warren was installed as chancellor and ambassador. Upon accepting the chancellorship, Warren stated, “[M]y understanding of the meaning of ordination and conviction from Scripture on ministry leadership are identical to Charles Spurgeon’s published views” (“Rick Warren named,” Baptist News Global, May 16, 2023). That is a ridiculous statement! Consider just a few major differences: Warren preaches an incredibly shallow, unscriptural gospel with no hint of repentance, whereas Spurgeon preached repentance and a full-bore regenerating gospel. Warren’s shallow gospel bloated his church’s membership with nominal Christians, whereas Spurgeon made a great effort to maintain a regenerate-only membership. Warren’s ecumenical principle embraces theological liberals and Roman Catholic priests, whereas Spurgeon renounced such a practice. Warren practices friendship with the world, whereas Spurgeon practiced separation from the world. Warren ordains women to the pastorate, where Spurgeon renounced this. Spurgeon’s College was not associated with Metropolitan Tabernacle from the turn of the 20th century and had been on a downward spiral of apostasy. From 1961-1977, the college was led by George Beasley-Murray, who claimed that Jesus was wrong about the timing of the Second Coming, that John’s Gospel was not written by John but by a community of John’s followers, and that salvation is not complete without baptism. Beasley-Murray participated in the apostate World Council of Churches and praised its “general theology” and “deep spirituality” (“The Rise and Fall of Spurgeon’s College,” Standing on Shoulders, Jan. 19, 2010). The “theology” of the WCC includes every type of heresy and blasphemy, including denial of Christ’s deity, eternal Sonship, virgin birth, sinlessness, vicarious atonement, and bodily resurrection, and its “spirituality” embraces idolatrous Hindu dances, mindless Buddhist chants, and North American Indian spirit sacrifices. CATHOLIC COLLEGE OPERATES ON OLD D.L. MOODY PROPERTY (Friday Church News Notes, February 6, 2026, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The vast majority of old fundamentalist churches and institutions have become evangelical over the past 50 years, and many of them have morphed from fundamentalism to evangelicalism to liberalism and Catholicism. This is the fruit of the new evangelicalism with its renunciation of separatism and its tendency to erase “boundaries.” This exact thing is happening to fundamental Baptists. Consider Trinitarian Congregational Church of East Northfield, Massachusetts. It was made famous by the preaching of D.L. Moody and was pastored by C.I. Scofield from 1895 to 1902. In the first half of the 20th century, the church rejected fundamentalism for the new evangelicalism. By the mid-20th century it was completely modernistic. In 1961, it joined the ultra-liberal United Church of Christ (UCC), which is a member of the World Council of Churches. Lloyd Parrill, who pastored Trinitarian from 1977 to 2012, said the church’s goal is “to seek justice and peace for all.” But there is no justice or peace apart from salvation through saving faith in the blood of Jesus Christ. In 2018, Trinitarian voted unanimously to become an “Open and Affirming Church,” which means homosexuals are accepted as members without repentance or conversion. (Contrast 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.) Consider D.L. Moody’s Northfield School for Girls and Mount Hermon School for Boys. The evangelist’s goal was to educate young people in a gospel-saturated environment to produce Christian soldiers for God’s work. In 1971, the schools merged as one co-ed institution, the Northfield Mount Hermon School (NMH). The school became wishy-washy evangelical, then entirely liberal. “Under subsequent administrations, the schools grew more theologically liberal and ultimately became non-denominational. Today, NMH offers diverse ways to pursue religious studies and personal spirituality” (“Northfield Mount Hermon School,” Wikipedia). “We’re a secular school that affirms religious diversity. After NHM, students move ... into the world with confidence. They are curious, inspired, motivated. They are ready” (nmhschool.org). Indeed, they are ready for the world, but they are not ready to meet God. In 2017, the Roman Catholic Thomas Aquinas College purchased 3/4th of the property formerly owned by the Moody’s Northfield School for Girls. In 2018, the Catholic school began operation on the property. On March 6, 2022, the old Sage Chapel of Moody’s era was renamed Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel. To consecrate the building as a Catholic chapel, Bishop William Byrne conducted a 2.5 hour mass. He sprinkled the building’s walls with holy water, anointed the chapel’s 17 crucifixes with oil, incensed the altar, lit candles, and set up an image of Mary. The ceremony featured a processional in which the bishop and priests carried the relics of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. John Henry Newman for installation in the altars (“Chapel rededicated,” Greenfield Recorder, Mar. 7, 2022). Changes to the building include two mass altars, confessional booths, and Stations of the Cross.
A COUPLE OF WARNINGS ABOUT FACEBOOK (Friday Church News Notes, February 6, 2026, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Facebook has some real benefits; it facilitates daily communication with friends and family; it is a great advertising forum; but there are also great dangers for Christ’s assemblies and I intend to continue warning about these. Those who use Facebook need these warnings, whether or not they quit it, that they might take heed to what they are doing and not allow themselves to backslide as the proverbial frog in the heated pot. I have no doubt that Facebook has brought moral corruption and spiritual weakening into Bible-believing churches, and woe be unto the pulpits that become silent in the face of such things. Following are two testimonies we received some time back: Testimony #1 - “I found that Facebook caused my heart to be on things other than spiritual things. My mind, when I woke up, was on what I missed throughout the night since I lived in a different time zone than many of my ‘friends.’ When I went to bed, I’d want to ‘check in’ one last time. I found that FB caused me to ‘keep up’ with all the heartbreaking trash that was going on with all the IFB churches that are involved with spreading the ‘Hyles’ mindset.” Testimony #2 - “As far as Facebook I have completely and happily quit going there for 2 years now. The family thinks I’m nuts, but they are mostly unsaved. ... Facebook entices to sin, gossip, seeing nakedness, filthy talking, fornication and all manner of vices, and takes precious time away from reading Scripture, listening to sermons, or reading articles and commentaries. Facebook can take a person on mindless journeys for hours through photos and family secrets ... I love being on an email list so I can pay attention to the article at hand only and not other things to distract me. Facebook is a plague.”
THE BEETLE WHO IS A CHEMIST (Friday Church News Notes, February 6, 2026, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is from CreationMoments.com, December 23, 2025: “Imagine a beetle that can move across the surface of water without any body movement. Some creatures have been given such ability and skill that it should be clear to even the most skeptical person that their Maker and Teacher is greater than any human being. One such creature is the large-eyed rove beetle. Like many other insects, this beetle can walk on water. The surface tension of the water is enough to support the beetle on top of the water, given the special structure of his legs and feet. Should you see the large-eyed rove beetle, you will notice that he moves across the water, stops, turns, and starts up again without moving any part of his body. How does this work? The large-eyed rove beetle has special glands that produce a chemical--something like detergent--that changes the surface tension of the water. When the surface tension of the water near his back feet is different from the surface tension of the water near his front feet, the beetle is pulled forward. Such a unique method of movement requires sophisticated knowledge of both hydrodynamics and chemistry. Since the beetle is obviously not that smart, it is no wonder that evolutionists often speak of evolution as though it were intelligent and able to create such wonders. However, it makes a lot more sense to talk about a wise, personal Creator than it does to speak of the wisdom of a mindless force like evolution.”
CONCLUSION: The Friday Church News Notes is designed for use in churches and is published by Way of Life Literature’s Fundamental Baptist Information Service. Unless otherwise stated, the Notes are written by David Cloud. Of necessity we quote from a wide variety of sources, but this obviously does not imply an endorsement. We trust that our readers will not be discouraged. It is God’s will that we know the times (1 Ch. 12:32; Mt. 16:3) and that we be as wise as serpents and harmless as doves. The News Notes remind us that the hour is very late, and we need to be ready for the Lord’s coming. Are you sure that you are born again? Are you living for Christ? “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof” (Ro. 13:11-14).
