AMERICA’S SPORTS GOD TAKING A HIT (Friday Church News Notes, September 25, 2020, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - A Gallup poll released on September 8 shows public devotion to professional sports has plummeted in the last year. “30 percent see the sports industry positively, compared to 40 percent reporting a negative image. This year’s survey illustrates a 30 percent decline from American views on the sports industry a year ago, when the corporate sports enjoyed a net positive 20 percent rating, with 45 percent of Americans reporting a favorable opinion compared to 25 percent who said otherwise. Gallup shows sports favorability among Republicans sinking overwhelmingly in comparison to Democrats, with a 46 percent drop in a positive outlook among Republicans whereas Democrats only saw a 5 percent drop in their favorability towards corporate sports in the last year. Non-white Americans also dropped their support for the industry more steeply than did white Americans” (“Gallup: Public Favorability Towards U.S. Sports Industry Has Collapsed,” The Federalist, Sept. 11, 2020).

LOVERS OF PLEASURES (Friday Church News Notes, September 25, 2020, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - One of the characteristics of end-time apostasy as prophesied in Scripture is that men will be “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God(2 Timothy 3:4). This is a perfect description of today’s pleasure mad society. There have never been more avenues for pleasure. Even most professing Christians love pleasures more than God. There is some love of God, but there is more love of pleasure. Consider the test of time. How much of one’s time is spent on God compared with how much is spent on pleasures? Consider the test of money, energy and enthusiasm. A great many Christians, even in the staunchest Bible-believing churches, are as sports mad as the secular crowd. Christian youth are as much in love with video games and rock & roll and hip hop and mature-rated movies and social media self-expression as the secular crowd. Consider the typical church’s calendar, which is filled to the brim with entertainment, not only for children and teens, but also for the “senior citizens.” Over the pleasure program is a thin veneer of God. Think of the average evangelical or even “fundamentalist” Christian home. There is a little prayer, a little Bible, a little evangelism, a little ministry, perhaps, but there is a whole lot of pleasure.

PRO-ABORTION FEMALE BIBLE TEACHER AT SBC PRESIDENT’S CHURCH (Friday Church News Notes, September 25, 2020, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from “Pro-Abortion Female Bible Teacher,” Reformation Charlotte, Sept. 21, 2020: “Rebecca Shrader refers to herself as a ‘pro-life feminist, pro-choice Christian’ who authored a ‘statement of lament’ for white people to sign denouncing their skin color. Shrader is a small group Bible teacher at J.D. Greear’s Summit Church in North Carolina, and proudly boasts it. [Greear has twice been elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention.] Shrader is a very confused person who believes that she is ‘pro-life’ because she chose not to kill her own children. However, Shrader is continually and adamantly clear that she believes every woman should have the ‘choice’ whether or not to end their own children’s lives. She defends Planned Parenthood and does not believe that life begins at conception. ... So it should come as no surprise that Shrader, a teacher and member in good standing at the Southern Baptist Convention president’s church, praises one of the most anti-Christ, pro-abortion, pro-sodomy Supreme Court Justices ever to walk the face of this earth, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”

ALL SCHOOLS IN ENGLAND REQUIRED TO TEACH LGBT-AFFIRMING CURRICULUM (Friday Church News Notes, September 25, 2020, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from “All Schools,” CBN News, Sept. 9, 2020: “Beginning this month, all schools in England are required to teach an LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum. High schools will educate students on sexual orientation, gender identity, and healthy relationships while primary schools will teach children about different families--including LGBTQ members. The new guidelines indicate that an updated curriculum will allow students to achieve ‘mental wellbeing’ and ‘to know how to be safe and healthy.’ ... Last November, parents in Birmingham protested against their children learning about LGBTQ equality, arguing that lessons on same-sex relationships go against their religious beliefs. Parents held signs saying ‘My Child My Choice,’ ‘Let Kids Be Kids,’ and ‘Say No to Sexualisation to Children.’ ... Despite the resistance in Birmingham, members of the English Parliament voted 538-21 in favor of the new curriculum to begin in September 2020.”

BLACK LIVES MATTER LEADERS PRACTICE VOODOO (Friday Church News Notes, September 25, 2020, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from “Black Lives Matter Co-Founder,” ChristianNews.net, Aug. 28, 2020: “In an interview posted to social media, Black Lives Matter (BLM) Co-Founder Patrisse Cullors, along with BLM Los Angeles Co-Founder Melina Abdullah, discussed the ‘spiritual’ component of the movement, explaining the practices and ‘rituals’ performed to remember and ‘invoke’ the spirits of deceased African Americans. ‘We speak their names … [and] you kind of invoke that spirit, and then their spirits actually become present with you,’ Abdullah, a professor at California State University, stated during the discussion hosted by Fowler Museum at UCLA. Cullors said, ‘In my tradition, you offer things that your loved one who passed away would want, whether it’s honey or tobacco or things like that,’ she said, referring to the creation of an ‘ancestor altar,’ which is sometimes practiced in African cultures. ... As previously reported, in 2018, Abdullah poured libation and summoned the spirits of a number of deceased African American leaders during an event at Hollywood United Methodist Church.  She instructed those gathered to declare ‘ashe’ as she made declarations and poured bottled water into a plant. According to the website yagbeonilu.com, ‘ashe’ ... is an ‘African philosophical concept through which the Yoruba of Nigeria conceive the power to make things happen and produce change.’ ... Abdullah said during her recent interview with Cullors, ‘When we first started, I remember us going to the ocean and doing these rituals and really feeding our spirit.’ ... As previously reported, Black Lives Matter was formed by Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi in 2013 in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin. Cullors is a self-described ‘queer’; Garza identifies as lesbian; and Tometi is a self-described feminist. ... the BLM site’s ‘What We Believe’ page also outlines, ‘We foster a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).’” “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL CALLS MAINSTREAM MEDIA “A COLLECTION OF LIARS” (Friday Church News Notes, September 25, 2020, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from an interview by U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr with Townhall, Sept. 11, 2020: “They’re basically a collection of liars. Most of the mainstream media. They’re a collection of liars and they know exactly what they’re doing. A perfect example of that were the riots. Right on the street it was clear as day what was going on, anyone observing it, reporters observing it, it could not have escaped their attention that this was orchestrated violence by a hardened group of street fighting radicals and they kept on excluding from their coverage all the video of this and reporting otherwise and they were doing that for partisan reasons, and they were lying to the American people. It wasn’t until they were caught red-handed after essentially weeks of this lie that they even started feeling less timid. The press has dropped, in my view--and I’m talking about the national mainstream media--has dropped any pretense of professional objectivity and are political actors, highly partisan who try to shape what they’re reporting to achieve a political purpose and support a political narrative that has nothing to do with the truth. They’re very mendacious about it. It’s very destructive to our Republic; it’s very destructive to the Democratic system to have that, especially being so monolithic. It’s contributing to a lot of the intensity and partisanship. ... I think there are a handful of reporters in the mainstream media that still have journalistic integrity, and there are some, but the overwhelming majority don’t have it anymore.”

THE UNREGENERATE CHRISTIAN AND THE CHIMPANZEE (Friday Church News Notes, September 25, 2020, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from Harry Ironside, Changed by Beholding: “A great many people make the mistake of trying to live the life before they receive the life. The hardest thing I know is to try to live the Christian life when you do not have it to live. There must be a Christian life first before you can exemplify and manifest it. To try to live a Christian life when you have never been born again is just as hopeless as for a chimpanzee to try and live a human life. I have seen some chimpanzees that could copy things people do in a remarkable way. At a zoo in Philadelphia, they once said to me, ‘Come along and see a couple of your ancestors.’ I went along; there were two trained chimpanzees who had learned to mimic human beings to a remarkable degree. They wore clothes, sat at a table, ate, and drank, and in a clumsy way handled a knife and fork. When they got all through, they settled back and put cigarettes in their mouths, and a keeper lit them, and they looked to me exactly like a lot of our own people do when smoking cigarettes. ... But although those chimps could do all those things, they did not know anything about real human life. They did not know anything of the principles controlling men and women. They were simply imitators. Many people imitate Christians and try to behave like them. They do not know anything of the power of the Christian life. They have never been born again. ‘Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God’ (John 3:3).”

CONCLUSION: The Friday Church News Notes is designed for use in churches and is published by Way of Life Literature’s Fundamental Baptist Information Service. Unless otherwise stated, the Notes are written by David Cloud. Of necessity we quote from a wide variety of sources, but this obviously does not imply an endorsement. We trust that our readers will not be discouraged. It is God’s will that we know the times (1 Ch. 12:32; Mat. 16:3) and that we be as wise as serpents and harmless as doves. The News Notes remind us that the hour is very late, and we need to be ready for the Lord’s coming. Are you sure that you are born again? Are you living for Christ? “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof” (Rom. 13:11-14).
