June 26, 1996 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist News Service, 1701 Harns Rd., Oak Harbor, WA 98277) - On April 22 we posted some excerpts from letters from Promise Keepers supporters. The following are examples from correspondence we have received since then. These letters present an eye-opening window into that movement. It never ceases to fascinate me that many of those who label biblical fundamentalists unloving and judgmental are incredibly unloving and judgmental in their attitude toward the same! The O Timothy Editor's mailbag is living proof of this. Consider some more excerpts from letters I have received from Promise Keepers supporters:

"Have you people ever been to a Promise Keeper's conference? I seriously doubt it! If you ask me, it is satan who is afraid of what Promise Keepers is doing and he is using people like yourselves to attempt to confuse people and lead them astray from what Jesus Christ taught us. I also wonder if you folks have ever actually read the Bible. ... I'll tell you what, why don't you attend the next Promise Keepers conference and bring your Bible (if you can find it) and make notes of everything you hear and/or see that is not biblical, post these things on your web page and if you are indeed correct, if you are able to find ONE shred of evidence that the Bible instructs us to not associate with people of other denominations ... I my friend will become a member of your cult and be just as empty headed and hard hearted as you are. Do you honestly have the unmitigated gall to believe that you and so called Christians like you are the only people who can be saved? ... Come out from under your rock and realize that while you are afraid and hiding from the world there are souls 'out there' who need your guidance."

"That is the biggest bunch of bull I have heard in a long time. You must understand that no single denomination has a lock on God or Heaven. ... What are you doing to spread the Gospel and when was the last time you had 60,000 men together singing, praying, crying and praising God? I am praying for you that your eyes will be opened."

"It is apparent that you guys are not reading the same Bible that I read. ... It makes me sick to my stomach to hear you guys bash Promise Keepers. Just remember that some day we will all stand before a mighty and just God who will tell us who was right and who was wrong, until then I'll stand on the side of Promise Keepers. Praise God for men like Bill McCartney who will take a stand and not let guys like you stand in the way."

"If you have any church covenants that are contrary to PK then you are in a church that is not following the teachings of the Holy Bible. The Lord bless you and help you not to be judgment."

"I've had enough propaganda. ... God's grace is infinite for those who don't believe 'exactly' like you do."

"I'm going to the Promise Keepers conference in Denver today, and I'm sure Iwill get a lot more out of it than I did reading your stuff."

"When you ask Fundamentalists questions they either refuse to answer or can't. It must be from their habit of selective interpretation."

"You seem to PRIDE yourself on separation from any who are not in your particular congregation. ... Instead of pointing to just the actual biblical inconsistencies, you resort to character assassinations ... your letters have a very legalistic tone. ... My friend, the Lord says 'take the log from your own eye first, then you will be able to see clear enough to remove the speck from your brother's eye. ... I would strongly caution you my friends about what the Lord said concerning calling the work of the Holy Spirit the work of the Devil."

"I have just read your highly inflamatory and totally sick treatise on the Promise Keepers men's movement. I believe you are the very same agents of the evil one of which you speak. Your hate is so apparent and satan is so obviously using your vile and destructive words to keep the Word and the Love of the one true and living God from reaching your readers and reclaiming those men of the world from this hell on earth. ... Promise Keepers, the Christians leading it, and all of the men such as I who have become supporting members rebuke you and your evil leader. Get thee behind me satan. Or, better yet, turn your hearts to God, come experience Him working in a stadium full of 60, 70 or 80 thousand men. Experience the Spirit changing the lives of lost and sinful men and be changed yourselves."

"You sound a little bit like the rich young ruler, don't you think?" [I don't have the foggiest idea what this man meant, but I thought I would throw it in to illustrate the nutty letters I continually receive!]

"Don't you have more important things to write about than attacking the Promise Keeper movement? ... Based on reading some of your comments, you stand in judgment of men like Bill McCartney and Tony Campolo. While I don't agree with everything they say and write, I do believe they are striving to become more Christlike. Can you say the same with your spirit of condemnation?"

"Your article gives the feeling you are surrounded by error, with nowhere to turn. You sound like satan is over-powering the true church, when he said himself the gates of hell cannot stop the church."

"Wake up and smell the coffee. Encourage in love."

"You should go to God in prayer and ask for forgiveness for judging Promise Keepers."

"Why do you support Satan's point of view about the movement of God and Jesus in Promise Keepers?"

"I will personally pay for you to attend a Promise Keepers stadium event. If you do, you will see that your diatribes against them are based on ignorance. ... They are committed to doctrine, to truth, to Biblical Christianity."
