November 15, 1996 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - A sympathetic report on the "Laughing Revival" (also called the "Toronto Blessing") sweeping through some parts of the Charismatic world appeared in the End-Time Handmaidens magazine for January 1995. Most of the Vineyard churches led by John Wimber are accepting the Laughing Revival as a work of God's grace. Ron Allen, one of the Vineyard pastors mentioned in this article, said that when he decided to go to Toronto to investigate the Laughing Revival, "the Lord" told him, "If you go to analyze, you will end up in criticism, and I will take My Spirit from you" (End-Time Handmaidens, January 1995, p. 18).
My friends, this is not the Lord of the Bible. The Lord of the Bible says this:
"PROVE ALL THINGS; hold fast that which is good" (1 Thess. 5:21).
"BEWARE of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves" (Matt. 7:15).
"These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and SEARCHED THE SCRIPTURES DAILY, WHETHER THOSE THINGS WERE SO" (Acts 17:11).
"But he that is spiritual JUDGETH ALL THINGS, yet he himself is judged of no man" (1 Cor. 2:15).
"PROVING what is acceptable unto the Lord" (Eph. 5:10).
"And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more IN KNOWLEDGE AND IN ALL JUDGMENT; that you may approve things that are excellent..." (Phil. 1:9-10).
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but TRY THE SPIRITS whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1).
"I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and THOU HAST TRIED THEM which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars (Rev. 2:2).
"And Jesus answered and said unto them, TAKE HEED THAT NO MAN DECEIVE YOU. ... many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. ... For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect" (Matt. 24:4,11,24).
The God of the Bible has warned repeatedly that His people must be very cautious and discerning, that the end of this age will be characterized by great spiritual error and deception, and by lying signs and wonders. He has said that it is the simple man who "believes every word," whereas the prudent man "looketh well to his going" (Prov. 14:15).
The God of the Bible has also promised that He will NOT take away His Holy Spirit from the true believer. "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, WHEREBY YE ARE SEALED UNTO THE DAY OF REDEMPTION" (Ephesians 4:30).
The god of the Laughing Revival is not the God of the Bible.
