LIBERAL EMERGING LEADERS EMBRACE EVOLUTIONARY SPIRITUALITY (Friday Church News Notes, December 31, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - There is a growing movement toward the integration of evolution and religion. Most Roman Catholics, including the Pope, hold a theistic evolutionary view, and it is very popular among New Agers. With the discovery of the complexity of the living cell through modern microbiology, it has become increasingly evident that some sort of God was involved in life, but not wanting to submit to the holy God of the Bible, men are forced to create a god of their own invention. In fact, most “Christians” in America already worship an idol rather than the true and living God. Many worship the non-judgmental god of The Shack, and many worship the mythical god of evolution. From December 4 through January 14 “evolutionary evangelist” Michael Dowd is hosting live panels of “preeminent Christians on the leading edge of science and religion” to promote theistic evolution (“Emergent Church Leaders Promote Evolutionary Spirituality,” CrosstalkBlog, Dec. 23, 2010). Dowd, who travels the country preaching “the gospel of billions of years,” has a sticker on his van depicting the Jesus and Darwin fishes kissing. It’s a false Jesus, of course, because the Christ of the Bible authenticated Genesis 1-11 as literal history (e.g., Matthew 19:4-5; 23:35: Mark 13:19; Luke 11:50-51; 17:26-32). Dowd says evolutionary spirituality is where “mythic beliefs and measurable reality collide.” The mythic beliefs are supposedly found in the Bible, whereas the measurable reality is evolutionary science. The truth is exactly the opposite. Among the 38 “Catholics, Protestants, Evangelicals, Pentecostals, and Progressives” joining Dowd are emergent leaders Sally Morgenthaler, Spencer Burke, Doug Pagitt, and Brian McLaren. We have documented the unbelief of these individuals in our book What Is the Emerging Church? Two other members of Dowd’s evolutionary spirituality discussion are Matthew Fox, who is so outrageous in his New Age theology that he was actually kicked out of the Catholic Church (see our book The New Age Tower of Babel), and John Spong, retired Episcopalian bishop and arch-heretic who denies the virgin birth, blood atonement, bodily resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. Actually, the existence of these “preeminent Christians” in our day is irrefutable evidence of the divine inspiration of Scripture, for the Scripture described them perfectly in a 2,000-year-old prophecy. “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of” (2 Peter 2:1-2).

Contemplative Spirituality and the New Age

___________________

The contemplative mysticism that is permeating evangelicalism is a bridge to the New Age. It has been called the “Western bridge to Far Eastern spirituality” (Tilden Edwards,
Spiritual Friends, p. 18).

In a 2005 interview Tony Campolo said:

“I got to meet the head of the Franciscan order. I met him in Washington. He said let me tell you an interesting story. He told me about one of their gatherings, where they bring the brothers of the Franciscan order together for a time of fellowship. About eight years ago they held it in Thailand and out of courtesy, they really felt they needed to show some graciousness to the Buddhists, because they were in a Buddhist country. So they got Buddhist theologians together and Franciscan theologians together and sent them off for three days to talk and see if they could find common ground. They also took Buddhist and Franciscan monastics and sent them off together to pray with each other. On the fourth day they all reassembled. The theologians were fighting with each other, arguing with each other, contending there was no common ground between them. The monastics that had gone off praying together, came back hugging each other. IN A MYSTICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD, THERE IS A COMING TOGETHER OF PEOPLE WHERE THEOLOGY IS LEFT BEHIND AND IN THIS SPIRITUALITY THEY FOUND A COMMONALITY” (“On Evangelicals and Interfaith Cooperation,” Cross Currents, Spring 2005).

Mystical experience is exalted over doctrine and is seen as a key to radical ecumenical and interfaith unity. But if you turn your back to Bible doctrine and try to reach beyond it through mysticism, you are entering the realm of spiritual delusion with no sure light to lighten your path.

Thomas Keating, one of the most influential voices in the contemplative movement, is past president of the Temple of Understanding, a New Age organization founded in 1960 by Juliet Hollister. The mission of this organization is to “create a more just and peaceful world” and its tools are New Age instruments such as interfaith dialogue, visualization, and community building.

Thomas Merton spoke at a Temple of Understanding conference in Calcutta, India, in 1968. He praised the interfaith atmosphere and his fellow pagan religionists.

Knowing God's Will

Enlarged December 28, 2010 (first published December 8, 2009) (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness” (Romans 12:1-8).

We see in Romans 12 that God has a great work in this world and He has called on His people to participate. There is a perfect will of God for each believer. If you are saved, you are called.

We see that the will of God must be proven. Salvation is a gift but God’s will is a prize to be sought.

Further, the will of God is not a future possibility but a present reality. If you don’t do the will of God today you won’t know the will of God tomorrow.

Following salvation, there are five steps that are emphasized in Romans 12 for those who want to know God’s will.

CONSERVATIVE EVANGELICALS
(Friday Church News Notes, December 24, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - There is a growing association toward between some “fundamentalists” and “conservative evangelicals.” Central Baptist Seminary of Minnesota, Calvary Baptist Seminary of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, and Northland International University (formerly Northland Baptist Bible College) have all recently praised “evangelical conservatives” for their “vigorous commitment to and defense of the gospel.” Northland invited Bruce Ware, Southern Baptist Seminary professor, in to conduct a seminar for pastors. Calvary Baptist Seminary invited Southern Baptist pastor Mark Dever as a speaker at their National Leadership Conference. And Kevin Bauder of Central Baptist has used his blog this year to praise “conservative evangelicals” such as Southern Baptist Seminary head Al Mohler. What is glaringly left out of this issue is the matter of separation. Bauder claims that the “conservative evangelicals” aren’t New Evangelicals and he conveniently defines New Evangelicalism in a way that proves his point (whereas his predecessors at Central, Richard Clearwaters and Ernest Pickering, displayed greater wisdom in their understanding of New Evangelism). While there are many aspects of New Evangelicalism, the defining principle from its inception was a “repudiation of separatism.” That was the way that Harold Ockenga put it. That is Billy and Franklin Graham’s foundational working principle. And by that definition, every Southern Baptist conservative is a New Evangelical. That is evident by the simple fact that they remain in the SBC, which is an unholy organization that encompasses theological Liberalism, Charismaticism, Masonism, Billy Graham ecumenical evangelism, modern textual criticism, amillennialism, the rock & roll emerging philosophy, female preachers, psychoheresy, Catholic mysticism, and other errors and evils. The Southern Baptist Convention is filled with men who have the same unscriptural philosophy as Ed Young Jr., with his non-judgmental, downplay doctrine philosophy and his close association with heretics such as Pentecostal Word-Faith preacher Brian Houston of Sydney, Australia. Brian’s wife is his “co-pastor”; he preaches a prosperity gospel; he thinks vain muttering is “tongues speaking”; and his worship leader participates in Roman Catholic conferences. The “conservative” Southern Baptist Ed is fine with all that. If you think I am wrong on this, send me a book or a preaching series by a “conservative evangelical” on separation. Typically, the only thing they have to say about separation is ridicule for those who try to practice it. They refuse to be restrained by separation. They don’t have a heart for it. They want a big tent, but God’s Word doesn’t allow it. “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them” (Romans 16:17).

Another essential thing in the Christian life is to understand the difference between position and practice or relationship and fellowship. What we mean by this is that the believer has a new position and relationship before God that is eternal and perfect and unchanging and that depends entirely upon Christ, but the believer also has a practice in this present world that is less than perfect and that depends on his obedience.

Multitudes of professing Christians have become discouraged or even shipwreck from failure to understand this truth. This almost happened to Harry Ironside, the famous Bible commentator. He began his Christian life as a zealous member of the Salvation Army. Believing their doctrine of a second blessing of sinless perfection, Harry set out to obtain this experience. He fasted and prayed and sought God as earnestly as he knew how. Finally he went out into the woods, determining to stay as long as necessary, and he experienced what he thought was the second blessing. He returned to a Salvation Army meeting and stood up to testify that he “had found it.” Soon, though, he realized that the “old man” was still present in his life, and he became so discouraged that he had a breakdown and ended up in a hospital. He determined to forget about the Christian life, since it “didn’t work,” but God sent two believers to instruct him properly in biblical sanctification. He was then able to establish his Christian life on a proper foundation and go on to be a very fruitful servant of Christ.

Health Insurance vs. Medical Sharing Plans

Updated December 21, 2010 (first published May 7, 1999) (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org; for instructions about subscribing and unsubscribing or changing addresses, see the information paragraph at the end of the article) –

NOTE: FOR CURRENT FEES FOR THE VARIOUS HEALTHCARE PROGRAMS, CONSULT THEIR WEB SITES. I DO NOT TRY TO KEEP THIS REPORT UPDATED WITH THAT TYPE OF INFORMATION. ADDRESS ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS DIRECTLY TO THE SPECIFIC ORGANIZATION. WE DO NOT REPRESENT ANY OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS AND CAN PROVIDE NO FURTHER INFORMATION. WE MAKE NO GUARANTEE THAT THE INFORMATION LISTED IS UP-TO-DATE.

In 1999, I sent out a request for information from those who have had personal experience with medical sharing plans. We had had family health insurance through Blue Cross of Washington and Alaska for the six or so years prior to that. After moving to another state in 1999, we were informed that Blue Cross of Washington could no longer cover us and we would have to get another policy (each Blue Cross associate is a separate entity). We learned that a Blue Cross in the new state would cost more than we had paid in Washington for less coverage. As we investigated the options, we became impressed that there are good alternatives, at least for many Christian families, than standard health insurance.

I received a flood of invaluable responses to my request for help in 1999 and have continued to receive responses over the years since then. Since many have asked me to share my findings, I will do so in the following report. Please note that I realize that family situations vary greatly. If you are satisfied with traditional health insurance, that is fine. If you are satisfied with a certain medical sharing plan that I do not highly recommend in my little report, that is fine, too. I am not trying to sell anything, and I certainly don’t want to debate anything. I am merely sharing the information I have collected for those who might find it useful. I have updated the information as I have received it, but the reader must understand that the following facts can easily change without my knowledge.

Responses to "What's Wrong With Most Soul-Winning Courses"

Following are some of the responses I received in regard to the article “What’s Wrong with Most Soul-winning Courses” which we published on December 15. (All of the feedback was positive, so I am not withholding anything.)

I am a Baptist missionary. Every year we have volunteer teams come from the States to assist us with our work here, and it is a constant struggle to try to get them to understand “biblical evangelism vs easy prayerism.” The article that you wrote is exceptional and I would like to include it in our training/orientation of the teams.
___________________________

I greatly appreciate your ministry and pray for you and your family weekly.  I have given away many copies of your book "Repentance & Soul-Winning."  I commend your recent article calling out the "Sword" evangelism methodology.

I wonder whether you have ever considered having a conference on the issue of preaching repentance as part of salvation.  It's amazing to me that most fundamental Baptists seem to act as if there is no controversy within their camp.  Certainly, the "Sword" crowd acts as if there is no other position than theirs.  ...

The most tragic is those profess that repentance is essential, but yet use the methodology of those who don't.  Thus producing false converts galore and not understanding why.

THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE (Friday Church News Notes, December 17, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - We celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible in 2011, and it is not merely another translation. Its heritage and the manner in which it was created are unique. The early record of the English Bible is one of the most fascinating chapters of church history and reads almost like a novel. The history of the British Empire, of the American nation, and of the English language itself are inextricably intertwined with the King James Bible. Our book The Glorious Heritage of the King James Bible recounts this history, beginning with the Wycliffe Bible of the late 14th century. Every English-speaking believer should know these things; yet, sadly, even in the staunchest Bible-believing churches it is rare to find someone who is well informed about the great price that was paid to provide us with such an excellent Bible in our own language. I have studied this history for many years, not only through literature (having built a large and expensive personal library on this subject) but through onsite research in the places where the history took place. By God’s grace I’ve traveled to Lutterworth and Oxford and Cambridge, to Little Sodbury Manor and St. Adeline’s Church and St. Dunstan’s and Fulham Palace, to Smithfield and Hampton Court and Westminster and the Jerusalem Chamber, to Lambeth Palace and the Lollard’s Tower and St. Paul’s Cathedral, to Vilvoorde and Geneva. I’ve handled ancient Waldensian New Testaments at the Cambridge Library and Trinity College Dublin and early edition Tyndale Bibles at the British Museum. This fascinating research has greatly strengthened my faith in God and in the authenticity and preservation of His holy Word, and I trust that The Glorious Heritage of the English Bible will do the same for each reader of this book. It would be a great book for families to read together in 2011. (This illustrated book is available from Way of Life Literature.)

BILLBOARDS ANNOUNCE DAY OF CHRIST’S RETURN (Friday Church News Notes, January 8, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The very confused Harold Camping, head of Family Radio Network, is claiming that Christ will return on May 21, 2011, and billboards have been set up in nine cities across America announcing the event. This is the second time that Camping has made a nutty prediction. In the last decade he predicted that Christ would return on September 6, 1994, and I don’t have to tell you that it didn’t happen. You would think that this world-class blunder would have ended his Bible teaching career, but in these days there are enough gullible people out there to keep such heretics afloat. Camping’s heresies are heard on 55 radio stations in America and via shortwave overseas, and his program is translated into 48 languages. He believes the church age ended in 1988 and that God has turned from churches to Family Radio as His means of preaching the gospel. His followers meet in homes to listen to Camping’s messages. There is no baptism, no Lord’s Supper, no pastor--especially no pastor. In late 2001, Baptist Pastor Jim Barker of Elmont, New York, was banned from preaching messages on the topic of the church on WFME radio that broadcasts from West Orange, New Jersey. Though he had preached on that station for many years, he was told that he could no longer identify himself as a pastor or mention the church. Barker warns, “Camping says sinners can no longer be saved in churches and if Christians defy him and continue to attend church services their children cannot be saved.” Camping also believes in extreme “sovereign election,” that you can only hope that you have been chosen and that “a baby can be saved as readily as a mature adult” (Time Has an End: A Biblical History of the World, 2005, p. 17). As for life’s most important question, “What must I do to be saved?” Camping says, “You cannot do anything.” Happily, the Bible has already given the answer to that question and it is “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31). As for Jesus’ coming, there is no doubt that He is coming again, but we don’t know when. We only know that it is imminent. We are instructed to expect Him at any time. There is one thing we do know, though, and that is that Jesus will NOT return on May 21, 2011, for He said, “Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh” (Matthew 25:13).

Teaching Children to Have a Daily Bible Reading Time

December 9, 2010 (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org; for instructions about subscribing and unsubscribing or changing addresses, see the information paragraph at the end of the article)

The following is excerpted from Keeping the Kids, which is available from Way of Life Literature:

“... from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures” (2 Timothy 3:15).

One of the most important things that parents can do for their children it to help them develop a habit of daily Bible study. Though I grew up in church, I do not remember any instruction or challenge whatsoever about this.

It is by the Word of God that the young person can cleanse his way in this wicked world (Psalm 119:9). It must get down into the heart and soul and thus permeate the individual’s life, and this will not happen unless reading, study, memorization, and meditation become a daily practice.

We know that reading the Bible alone will not produce salvation and sanctification; it must be received and obeyed. But we also know that salvation and sanctification
will not happen apart from the Word of God, because “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

It is never vain to put the Word of God into the child’s heart. Even though I wasn’t saved when I was young and didn’t take the Bible seriously, the teaching and preaching had a deep affect on me and after I was converted at age 23, much of it came back to me and I had a good head start in my Christian life.

Lucy: Evolutionary Myth Making

December 8, 2010 (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org; for instructions about subscribing and unsubscribing or changing addresses, see the information paragraph at the end of the article)

One of the most widely used icons of evolution is Lucy, the name given to a fossilized ape of the australopithecine class that is supposed to be millions of years old and is alleged to be a missing link between apes and man.

The actual fossils were shown at the
Lucy Legacy exhibit in Seattle, which I visited in March 2009. They announced this as “the key piece in evolution’s puzzle.” What they did not say is that the supposed indisputable evidence that this fossil is “proto-human” is non-existent.

Lucy was a tiny creature standing about 43 inches high. The skeleton itself is less than 40% complete and is entirely missing the foot bones, though other bones representing
Australopithecus exist.

The bones were found in 1974 in northern Ethiopia by Donald Johanson and his colleagues. The first bone discovered was a knee joint, which Johanson first considered to be that of a monkey, but upon further consideration announced that it was that of a
hominid. “He thereupon declared on the spot that he had discovered a three million year old human ancestor” (Gish, Evolution: The Fossils Still Say No, p. 241).

They named the fragmentary skeleton “Lucy” after playing the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” repeatedly at the camp rock & roll party the night of the discovery. John Lennon’s 1971 song “Imagine” would have been more suitable, as Johanson and crew were living out the vain Darwinian dream that there is no God, no heaven or hell, only blind evolution. In the chorus, Lennon sang, “You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one/ And some day I hope you’ll join us/ And the world will be as one.” Evolutionary scientists are at the forefront of pushing this dream of a world united in a damnable myth, and it is a fulfillment of Bible prophecy (e.g., Psalm 2; 2 Timothy 3:1-5; 2 Peter 2:1-2; 3:2-4).

EMERGING CHURCH PASTOR SAYS YOUNG PEOPLE NEED A CALLING, NOT RULES (Friday Church News Notes, December 3, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Steven Furtick of Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, says that what this generation needs is not more rules to live by, but a calling to live for (“Charlotte Pastor,” The Christian Post, Nov. 26, 2010). This is typical emerging church philosophy. In reality, what youth need is BOTH rules to live by and a call to real discipleship. In Scripture, discipleship involves keeping divine rules. Jesus instructed the churches to teach converts to “observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20), and those “all things” are found in the New Testament Scriptures. Consider the epistle of Ephesians. This epistle tells us that salvation is by God’s grace without works, but it also contains three chapters packed with rules for believers to live by, rules that cover every aspect of life, private, family, and work. Addicted to the pop culture, this generation has rejected rules for a “me first” lifestyle and philosophy, and the emerging church is tickling itching ears with a lusty Christianity (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Assuming an upbeat emerging stance, Furtick claims that this is “the most driven, most opportunistic, most positioned generation in history to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ all over the world.” In fact, this is a generation that typically lacks the self-sacrifice, discipline, and long-term commitment to accomplish such a task, but when a young person rejects his “generation,” repenting of his love for the ungodly, vain pop culture, and becomes a true disciple of Christ, submitting himself to Christ’s rule as expressed in Scripture, he can indeed help take the Gospel of Christ to this needy world. This is the objective that every church should have for its young people. What we do agree with is that young people in Bible-believing churches don’t need JUST rules, and they particularly don’t need a focus on a mere list of shallow external standards divorced from training in genuine heart-level discipleship.

The Gilgamesh Epic vs. The Bible's Flood Account

December 2, 2010 (David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org; for instructions about subscribing and unsubscribing or changing addresses, see the information paragraph at the end of the article)

One of the 19th-century archaeological discoveries in the ancient Assyrian library at Nineveh was the Gilgamesh flood account. Henry Layard found this on some tablets in the 1850s and sent it to the British Museum, where it was translated in 1872 by George Smith. It was believed that the account originated in about 1600 B.C. in Babylon.

Actually the Gilgamesh Epic should be named the Utnapishtim Epic, because it purports to be the account that Utnapishtim told Gilgamesh of how that he survived the flood and gained immortality.

Skeptics immediately used the Gilgamesh Epic as evidence that the Bible’s flood account is just one among many ancient legends.

In fact, most works on archaeology give only three possibilities: First, the Bible’s account borrowed from the Babylonian. Second the Babylonian account borrowed from the Bible’s. This possibility has been almost universally rejected. Third, both accounts used a common source.

A Bible believer will reject all three of these, being convinced that the biblical account is what it claims to be: divine revelation. Only willful prejudice would fail even to consider this fourth “possibility,” and this willful unbelief is described in Peter’s amazing prophecy.

Testimony of a Converted Scholar

December 1, 2010 (Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org; for instructions about subscribing and unsubscribing or changing addresses, see the information paragraph at the end of the article) -

The following was published in a British publication, The Record, October 1862. It was written by Robert Walker, Vicar of Wymeswold, Leicestershire. He wrote at a time when unbelief was permeating the Church of England and British society at large. Theological modernism, Unitarianism, Humanist Philosophy, and Evolution were making great strides. It was three years after the publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. Thomas Huxley, Darwin’s bulldog, was barking loudly against the truth of the Bible. Walker reminds us that regardless of how high a man’s level of intellect, he cannot understand the Bible unless he is born again. He reminds us of the danger of being “Christianized” without being regenerated. This message needs to be re-broadcast to the critics of our day.
