A WARNING ABOUT “HOLISTIC MEDICINE” (Friday Church News Notes, February 26, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - In response to our reports on homeopathy and other New Age health care practices I received the following testimony: “I have also, unfortunately, seen a significant amount of influence in favor of occultic and quackish ‘holistic’ remedies in some independent Baptist churches, and I have noticed that they are usually promoted by the women while the men who are supposed to protect them (1 Timothy 2:14), though they are not pushing the occultic ‘medicine,’ either do not even know what their women are into or are simply passive about it. I know one fundamental Baptist evangelist who, while he holds meetings, has his wife promote unscientific remedies in special meetings for ladies. They were influential in getting another lady who had a very easily curable form of cancer not to get surgery and chemo but to try ‘alternatives,’ some of which were occultic and none of which had any factual basis, and now cancer has spread through her whole body. Another woman I know promotes worthless supplement products and attacks legitimate medicine by an organization that is fraudulent (the Body Wise Corporation) and whose sole ‘scientist’ and ‘researcher’ is a homeopath who makes money from what the organization sells. This woman has tried to bypass me and influence my wife, something I did not appreciate (so I contacted the husband of the woman, since he is responsible for her). I can think of numbers of other fundamental Baptist women that are leading and passing along occult and quack remedies while men are failing in their responsibility to discern and protect their families. This ought not to be so.” (For more on this see the article “The New Age in Health Care” at the Way of Life web site.)
BENNY HINN’S WIFE FILES FOR DIVORCE (Friday Church News Notes, February 26, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - On February 18 The Los Angeles Times reported that the wife of Pentecostal evangelist Benny Hinn has filed for divorce. This is the latest in a long list of scandals associated with the Pentecostal movement, which claims to have a corner on the power and blessing of the Holy Spirit but which has actually been a stronghold of extremism and heresy since its inception at the turn of the 20th century. Just since 2000, three high profile Pentecostal-Charismatic preachers have admitted to homosexuality (Ted Haggard, Roberts Liardon, and Paul Cain) and six have divorced (Clarence McClendon, Juanita Bynum, Thomas Weeks, Randy and Paula White, and Todd Bentley). (For more on this see our book The Pentecostal-Charismatic Movements.)
CHURCH OF ENGLAND DECLARES EVOLUTION COMPATIBLE WITH FAITH (Friday Church News Notes, February 26, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The governing body of the Church of England recently approved a motion stating that evolution is compatible with the Christian faith. The motion was introduced by Peter Capon, who urged Christians to “take scientific evidence seriously and avoid prejudging science for theological reasons (Christian Post, Feb. 12, 2010). This is further evidence of the utter spiritual bankruptcy of the Church of England. The resolution coincided with Evolution Weekend, during which more than 850 “churches” celebrated Darwinism. This five-year-old movement is the brainchild of Michael Zimmerman, professor of biology at Butler University in Indianapolis, who says that “people can accept all that modern science has learned while retaining their faith.” This is true in regard to a vague religious faith but it is not true in regard to the Bible, which plainly teaches that the world was created by an Almighty God in six literal days. Modern science has been at war with Jesus Christ and His holy Word since the nineteenth century and has sought to replace the teaching of divine creation with naturalistic principles. The problem is not genuine science but “science falsely so called.” Darwinian evolution has purported to be scientific, when in fact it is a blind religious faith that lacks even a fragment of indisputable evidence.
ELTON JOHN SAYS JESUS WAS A HOMOSEXUAL (Friday Church News Notes, February 26, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - In a recent interview popular rock star Elton John said, “I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems” (“Elton John: There’s A Lot of Hate in the World,” Parade, Feb. 17, 2010). This reflects the wicked, anti-Bible attitude that permeates the rock & roll industry. Their morality is relativism and their god is self expression. “It’s your thing; do what you want to do.” The music is designed to fit this philosophy.
HATE CRIMES HARBINGER? (Friday Church News Notes, February 26, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from OneNewsNow, Feb. 10, 2010: “The mayor of Lancaster, California, has apologized for pro-Christian comments he made recently before a group of pastors. Mayor R. Rex Parris said in his address that Lancaster was ‘growing a Christian community,’ and after controversy developed he issued an apology. City Councilwoman Sherry Marquez posted on Facebook comments about a Muslim honor killing on the East Coast, thought better about it, and pulled the comments an hour and a half later. She has also apologized. The Antelope Valley Human Relations Task Force responded and heard from community residents Monday night. Task Force chairman Darren Parker tells OneNewsNow that hate crimes charges against Parris and Marquez will not be sought. ... Parker said the apologies were helpful. But the Council on American-Islamic Relations has filed a federal complaint against both parties. Brad Dacus of the Pacific Justice Institute complains that the case demonstrates that hate-crimes laws chill free speech. ‘With the hate-crimes bill in place, this is probably just one example of many to come of attempts to try to silence people of faith,’ says the attorney. ‘And that’s why we must aggressively correct this and make sure these individuals and their rights are protected against this kind of outrageous intimidation and silencing.’”
QUEBEC POLICY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA (Friday Church News Notes, February 26, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from WorldNetDaily, Jan. 17, 2010: “Quebec Attorney General Kathleen Weil, announcing new policy with Laurent McCutcheon, president of Foundation Emergence, a Quebec homosexual advocacy group. Opponents of ‘hate crimes’ legislation, who have frequently pointed to Canada as an example of how such laws are used to increasingly suppress moral objections to homosexuality, now have more fuel for their fire in the form of the ‘Quebec Policy Against Homophobia.’ The policy, released last month by Quebec’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General Kathleen Weil, assigns the government the task of eliminating all forms of ‘homophobia’ and ‘heterosexism’--including the belief that homosexuality is immoral--from society as a whole. The text and specifics of the policy are steeped in vague bureaucratic language about ‘coordination’ and ‘synergy,’ but the goal is spelled out clearly: to enlist the government to normalize homosexuality in society and to quell common criticisms levied against ‘sexual minorities,’ a term the policy uses to inclusively describe ‘lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals and transgenders.’ ‘An inclusive society such as ours must take the necessary steps to combat homophobic attitudes and behavior patterns and move towards full acceptance of sexual diversity,’ states the Premier of Quebec Jean Charest in a letter that serves as the policy's introduction. ‘The policy sets out the government’s goal of removing all the obstacles to full recognition of the social equality of the sexual minorities, at all levels of society.’ The policy further defines the heterosexism that must be stomped out as ‘affirmation of heterosexuality as a social norm or the highest form of sexual orientation.’”
THE WASP NEST THAT DEFIES EVOLUTION (Friday Church News Notes, February 26, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The Darwinian theory of evolution can’t explain how the wasp could have come into existence. We could consider its eyes, its amazing flying and landing ability, its folding wings (on some models), and many other things, but let’s consider one wasp’s reproductive cycle. This is the Eumenes amedei, which is a small black and yellow wasp-like insect of southern Europe and northern Africa. The females build small domed nests about the size of a cherry in which they deposit their eggs, one egg per structure. The masonry houses are composed of tiny pebbles mixed with a mortar made from dust mixed with the female’s spittle. She selects each pebble with care, testing it with her mandibles for weight and hardness and size. She also prefers more attractive pieces of stone such as shiny quartz. She skillfully forms the circular nest pebble by pebble, wielding them together with the strong, waterproof, quick-setting mortar. The eggs are suspended from the roof of the little house by a tiny thread, and before sealing the nest with a cement plug, the female stocks it with food in the form of caterpillars. To keep them from escaping or harming the egg, she paralyzes them with a sting that keeps them in an animated state long enough for the grubs to hatch. She also determines how many caterpillars to put in each nest, five for the male-bearing eggs and ten for the female-bearing. How she could possibly know the sex of her offspring before they born is a mystery for evolutionists, of course, but she never makes a mistake. When the grub emerges from the egg, it devours its eggshell then spins itself a tiny silken sheath in which it hangs with its head down. It lowers itself down to feed from the still-living caterpillars until it is time to break out of the nest.
LIBERAL BIBLE SCHOLARS PROVEN WRONG AGAIN (Friday Church News Notes, February 26, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from LiveScience.com, Jan. 15, 2010: “Scientists have discovered the earliest known Hebrew writing--an inscription dating from the 10th century B.C., during the period of King David’s reign. The breakthrough could mean that portions of the Bible were written centuries earlier than previously thought. ... Until now, many scholars have held that the Hebrew Bible originated in the 6th century B.C., because Hebrew writing was thought to stretch back no further. But the newly deciphered Hebrew text is about four centuries older, scientists announced this month. ‘It indicates that the Kingdom of Israel already existed in the 10th century BCE and that at least some of the biblical texts were written hundreds of years before the dates presented in current research,’ said Gershon Galil, a professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Haifa in Israel, who deciphered the ancient text. BCE stands for ‘before common era,’ and is equivalent to B.C., or before Christ. The writing was discovered more than a year ago on a pottery shard dug up during excavations at Khirbet Qeiyafa, near Israel’s Elah valley. The excavations were carried out by archaeologist Yosef Garfinkel of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.” Liberal Bible scholars have been proven wrong time and again. For example, they once denied the existence of the city of Ur, but that was before the ancient city with its magnificent library was excavated!
CONCLUSION: The Friday Church News Notes is designed for use in churches and is published by Way of Life Literature’s Fundamental Baptist Information Service. Unless otherwise stated, the Notes are written by David Cloud. Of necessity we quote from a wide variety of sources, but this obviously does not imply an endorsement. We trust that our readers will not be discouraged. It is God’s will that we know the times (1 Ch. 12:32; Mat. 16:3) and that we be as wise as serpents and harmless as doves. The News Notes remind us that the hour is very late, and we need to be ready for the Lord’s coming. Are you sure that you are born again? Are you living for Christ? “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof” (Rom. 13:11-14). SIX-YEAR-OLD ARRESTED (Friday Church News Notes, February 19, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - A first-grade student in Port St. Lucie, Florida, was arrested, handcuffed, and committed to a mental health facility because the school couldn’t handle her behavior. After her teacher asked her to do something, six-year-old Haley Shalansky stormed out of the classroom and when taken to the principal’s office she flew into a rage, kicking the wall, throwing things, even hitting the principal. Since the public schools are not allowed to spank children, the police were called in. They handcuffed the little girl and hauled her off to a “mental health facility” (WPBF.com, Feb. 10, 2010). America is a sad nation. Having turned from God it has no wisdom. Humanism has replaced God’s Word, and political correctness has replaced common sense. How can America win the “war against terror” when it can’t even discipline its own little children and it puts ridiculous restrictions on its brave military?
ATHEISM ON THE MARCH (Friday Church News Notes, February 19, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Atheism, which the Bible calls the philosophy of fools, is on the march in these last days. Most recently atheists have purchased space on billboards in Sacramento, California, to advertise their opinions. The signs, which are sponsored by the grossly misnamed Sacramento Area Coalition of Reason, proclaim, “Are you good without God? Millions are.” That is far from reasonable, because millions can easily be wrong as right. What is the evidence that there is no God? Does the existence of a complex universe speak eloquently of no God? If you want to talk numbers, vastly more people believe in God than don’t, but as far as I know, God’s existence isn’t up for election. And if He exists, no one is good without Him, not in this world and certainly not in the next. If atheism is true, it matters not a whit how we live or what we believe, but if the Bible is true it matters greatly how we live and what we believe, because man is a fallen sinner, there is a heaven and a hell after death, and the only way of salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ.
LESBIAN PRIEST RECEIVES MORE VOTES OF APPROVAL (Friday Church News Notes, February 19, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from The Christian Post, Feb. 13, 2010: “A controversial priest who has a lesbian partner has so far received more than half the votes she needs to be consecrated as an assistant bishop. And the 120-day consent process began just a month ago. The Rev. Canon Mary Douglas Glasspool has 29 consents to become bishop suffragan, according to a recent report by the Diocese of Los Angeles. She needs 56 to be confirmed as the second openly homosexual bishop in The Episcopal Church. ‘Throughout her 30 years of ordained ministry, the Rev. Mary Glasspool has been faithful and consistent to the ministry, doctrine and teaching of the Episcopal Church,’ Bishop Nathan Baxter of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania wrote in a pastoral letter indicating his consent. ... Glasspool has been with her partner, Becki Sander, since 1988. Her election in December to the office of bishop suffragan in the Diocese of Los Angeles has caused another uproar across The Episcopal Church, six years after it consecrated its first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire. ... Glasspool, who first came out to the national body 30 years ago, says ‘it’s time for our wonderful church to move on and be the inclusive Church we say we are.’”
COMMUNIST CHINA’S CITIZEN SPY NETWORK (Friday Church News Notes, February 19, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from “Officer Boasts of 12,000 Spies,” Sydney Morning Herald, Feb. 12, 2010: “The director of an Inner Mongolian public security bureau said officers had recruited 12,093 of his county’s 400,000 inhabitants to provide intelligence, offering an unusual glimpse into the state's surveillance network. Liu Xingchen told the state news agency Xinhua the priorities were to collect information about conflicts that might lead to complaints to higher authorities and to discover ‘non-harmonious elements.’ Experts said it was rare to see information on the numbers of informants or public discussion of the network, although detailed accounts of surveillance work are available in documents intended for internal use. While China's surveillance network is known to be extensive, it is not clear how active the informants in Kailu County are or how typical the figures are of wider practices. ... In the interview, translated by the news website China Digital Times, he said the bureau had sought to ‘dig deep for intelligence information on many fronts, proactively discover non-harmonious elements that affect stability … [and try to] evolve from being passive to being active, to go from punishing after the fact to resolving the problem before the fact.’”
THE SHACK’S SALES AND INFLUENCE CONTINUES TO GROW (Friday Church News Notes, February 19, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The Shack has been in the New York Times Top Ten for Paperback Trade Fiction since June 2008. It has sold seven million copies worldwide and been translated into two languages. Written by William Paul Young, The Shack is about redefining God. Young has said that the book is for those with “a longing that God is as kind and loving as we wish he was” (interview with Sherman Hu, Dec. 4, 2007). What he is referring to is the desire on the part of the natural man for a God who loves “unconditionally” and does not require repentance or obedience, does not judge sin, and does not make men feel guilty for what they do. In that same interview, Young said that a woman wrote to him and said that her 22-year-old daughter came to her after reading the book and asked, “IS IT ALRIGHT IF I DIVORCE THE OLD GOD AND MARRY THE NEW ONE?” Young therefore admits that the God of The Shack is different from the traditional God of Bible-believing Christianity. He says that the God who “watches from a distance and judges sin” is “a Christianized version of Zeus.” This reminds me of the modernist G. Bromley Oxnam, who called the God of the Old Testament “a dirty bully” in his 1944 book “Preaching in a Revolutionary Age.” The Shack depicts God the Father as a large black woman who loves to listen to hip hop. The Shack god is the god of the emerging church. She/He is cool, loves rock & roll, is non-judgmental, does not exercise wrath toward sin, does not send unbelievers to an eternal fiery hell, does not require repentance and the new birth, puts no obligations on people, and doesn’t like traditional Bible churches. Note the following quotes from Young’s god: “I don’t need to punish people for sin. Sin is its own punishment, devouring you from the inside. It’s not my purpose to punish it...” (The Shack, p. 120). Contrast Isaiah 13:11. “Those who love me come from every system that exists. They were Buddhists or Mormons, Baptists or Muslims ... and many who are not part of any Sunday morning or religious institutions. ... I have no desire to make them Christian” (p. 182). Contrast Acts 4:12; 26:28. Young’s god has a strong kinship to the New Age god promoted by Oprah Winfrey. The Shack is another building stone of the end-times Tower of Babel. (For more on this see “The Shack’s Cool God” at the Way of Life web site.)
LIFEWAY SELLS “THE SHACK” AND EMERGING BOOKS (Friday Church News Notes, February 19, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Lifeway Christian Stores, which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, are selling “The Shack,” a novel that depicts God as a woman who doesn’t judge people. On a visit to the Lifeway bookstore in Huntsville, Alabama, in June 2009, the book was on display with a notice that said, “This book may contain thoughts, ideas, or concepts that could be considered inconsistent with historical evangelical theology. Therefore, we encourage you to read it with extra discernment.” By means of this disclaimer, Lifeway intends to make money from this popular book while avoiding responsibility for its heresies, but it won’t work. The Bible warns that if we do not disassociate strictly from those who preach false christs, we become partakers of their evil deeds (2 John 7-11). Lifeway is not only associating with William Young and his heresies by selling the book, but they are actually putting funds into his coffers to enable him to promote his heresies. The Lifeway warning says the book “MAY contain” thoughts contrary to sound theology and urges readers to use discernment, but they don’t identify anything in particular and a large percentage of their customers doubtless lack the Bible knowledge and spiritual discernment required to discern truth from error. This is like serving up a dish contaminated with poison to children and warning them to eat with caution! The Lifeway bookstores are filled to the brim with psychology, self-help, self-esteem, romance novels, ecumenical and charismatic literature, undependable Bible versions, and all sorts of “Christian” rock music. On a visit to a Lifeway store in Huntsville in 2009 I found that they had many titles by emerging church authors, including Rob Bell (Velvet Elvis), Brennan Manning (The Ragamuffin Gospel), Erwin McManus (The Barbarian Way), Donald Miller (Blue Like Jazz), and Shane Claiborne (The Irresistible Revolution). Lifeway will stand accountable before God for polluting the minds and hearts of their customers with unscriptural material and for refusing to carry sound material from fundamentalist Bible-based publishers that they could and should be stocking but which they refuse to stock because these are “controversial.” (For more information see “What Is the Emerging Church” at the Way of Life web site.)
AUTHOR OF THE SHACK DENIES SUBSTITUTIONARY ATONEMENT AND HELL FIRE (Friday Church News Notes, February 19, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - In an interview on March 13, 2009, with Kendall Adams of KAYP radio, William Young, author of The Shack, denied substitutionary atonement and hell fire, two cardinal doctrines of the biblical Christian faith. When asked, “I take it that you wouldn’t agree that the cross was a place of punishment for sin,” Young replied, “No. I don’t; I [don’t hold] a penal substitution point of view.” Young also said, “I don’t think that hell is physical fire and that kind of stuff and it is not an issue of separation from God.” The Shack is very popular among emerging type churches, but it presents a false god.
STEPHEN GOULD’S NOMA (Friday Church News Notes, February 19, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Evolutionist Stephen Jay Gould, who was a bitter enemy of “creationism” and “intelligent design,” proposed that science and religion can find harmony if they are separated into different spheres. He called this NOMA -- Non-Overlapping Magisteria. (Magisterium refers to a teaching authority.) Gould would give the physical world and the issue of origins to evolutionary science while leaving the issues of morality and purpose to religion. Science supposedly deals with “empirical facts,” whereas religion deals with non-testable metaphysics. He said, “We [evolutionists] study how the heavens go, and they [religion] determine how to go to heaven.” (In reality Gould shared John Lennon’s atheistic faith that there is neither heaven nor hell.) According to this policy, religion and science are supposed to treat one another with respect but are not to interfere with the other’s “magisterial.” The Hall of Human Origins at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City promotes this idea. It depicts man as a product of blind Darwinian evolution and brashly contradicts the Bible’s account of creation, but a video presentation features some prominent evolutionists claiming that science and religion are friends. Francis Collins, director of the Human Genome Project, says, “I’m a scientist that believes the tools of science are the way to understand the natural world and one needs to be rigorous about that. But I’m also a believer in a personal God. I find the scientific worldview and the spiritual worldview to be entirely complementary. And I find it quite wonderful to be able to have both of those worldviews existing in my life in a given day, because each illuminates the other.” This might sound respectful toward “religion,” but in fact it is a bold repudiation of the Bible, because the Bible refuses to speak only about “religious things.” The Bible begins with the account of how the material universe was made, so it refuses to leave such things to “science.” And if the Bible is wrong about the material universe there is no reason to believe it is right about anything else and no reason to “respect” its teachings on any other subject. NOMA has rightly been called “a gag-order masquerading as a principle of tolerance.”

BILLY GRAHAM VOTED MOST INFLUENTIAL PREACHER (Friday Church News Notes, February 12, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - According to a new survey, Billy Graham has had the most influence on Protestant pastors of any living preacher. In addition to Graham, the list of top ten most influential preachers included Chuck Swindoll, Chuck Stanley, Rick Warren, David Jeremiah, and Mac Lucado. The survey was taken by LifeWay Research, an arm of the Southern Baptist Convention. Billy Graham has preached the gospel to more people than any other man in history, but he has also compromised the gospel as much as any man in history by pioneering the ecumenical evangelism philosophy that has torn down the biblical walls of separation between truth and error. He has turned hundreds of thousands of his “converts” over to Roman Catholic and liberal Protestant churches to be devoured by wolves in sheep’s clothing. (For documentation see “Billy Graham’s Sad Disobedience” at the Way of Life web site.)
RINGO STARR TURNS TO GOD (Friday Church News Notes, February 12, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - In a January interview, former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr said that the has turned to God. He said, “For me, God is in my life. I don’t hide from that” (“Ringo Starr is approaching more milestones,” Los Angeles Times, Jan. 26, 2010). But there is no evidence that Ringo’s God is the God revealed in Scripture. He said that the search for God is “all about finding yourself,” which it definitely is not. Rather it’s all about finding Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. Last year Ringo appeared in a documentary entitled Oh My God, which presents the world’s religions as alternative paths to God. Ringo declared, “God is love,” and He is, but He is also holy and a judge of sin, and since all men are sinners, the only way of escape from God’s judgment is through the redemption purchased by Jesus.
ANOTHER LOTTERY CATASTROPHE (Friday Church News Notes, February 12, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - In the book Money for Nothing: One Man’s Journey through the Dark Side of Lottery Millions, Edward Ugle says the “broke or financially troubled lottery winners are the rule.” In fact, the consequences of winning the lottery are often more frightful than mere financial trouble. Abraham Shakespeare, a professing Christian who “knew his way around the Bible,” purchased a winning lottery ticket in November 2006 and received a $17 million payout after taxes. In a little over two years he had spent most of the money and was murdered by someone who was probably one of his newfound “friends.” His relatives said that he was “miserable early on from his newfound fortune” (“Trust was costly for Shakespeare,” The Tampa Tribune, Feb. 4, 2010). In January 2007 he purchased a million-dollar home and then sold it for a loss of $350,000 two years later to a woman who said that she wanted to write the story of his life. On January 28, 2010, Shakespeare’s body was found buried under a slab of concrete on that property. If he knew the Bible, Shakespeare should have known better than to gamble. The Bible exposes the lottery for the lie that it is. The lottery encourages covetousness, which the Bible condemns, and it mocks contentment, which the Bible exalts. The deceitful message of the lottery is that wealth can solve your problems, but the Bible says, “Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven” (Proverbs 23:5). It is a poor testimony for a Christian to trust in “Lady Luck.” “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me” (Hebrews 13:5-6).
ANIMAL OWNERS BURIED WITH THEIR PETS (Friday Church News Notes, February 12, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - A growing trend in England is for animal lovers to be buried with their pets. The Telegraph of London reports that “an increasing number of pet owners [are] seeking burials with their favourite cats, dogs and horses” (“Owners pay to be buried with their pets,” Jan. 23, 2010). Some cemeteries are encouraging this practice. One operated by Penny Lally in Penwith, west Cornwall, has buried more than 30 people with their pets and has 120 “forward bookings.” The Egyptians and other idolatrous societies revered animals and buried them alongside their owners, but this is a pagan custom. There is no support for such a practice in Scripture. Burial looks forward to the bodily resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:42-44), but animals do not have living souls that survive death.
OBAMA NOMINEE SAYS SOCIETY SHOULD NOT TOLERATE BELIEFS AGAINST HOMOSEXUALITY (Friday Church News Notes, February 12, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from “Obama’s EEOC Nominee,” CNSNews.com, Jan. 18, 2010: “Chai Feldblum, the Georgetown University law professor nominated by President Obama to serve on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, has written that society should ‘not tolerate’ any ‘private beliefs,’ including religious beliefs, that may negatively affect homosexual ‘equality.’ Feldblum, whose nomination was advanced in a closed session of the Senate Health Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on December 12, published an article entitled ‘Moral Conflict and Liberty: Gay Rights and Religion’ in the Brooklyn Law Review in 2006. Feldblum’s admittedly ‘radical’ view is based on what she sees as a ‘zero-sum game’ between religious freedom and the homosexual agenda, where ‘a gain for one side necessarily entails a corresponding loss for the other side.’ Feldblum does recognize that elements of the homosexual agenda may infringe on Americans’ religious liberties. However, Feldblum argues that society should ‘come down on the side’ of homosexual equality at the expense of religious liberty. Because the conflict between the two is ‘irreconcilable,’ religious liberty -- which she also calls ‘belief liberty’ -- must be placed second to the ‘identity liberty’ of homosexuals.” CONCLUDING NOTE: Feldblum, who obviously despises both the Bible and the U.S. Constitution, is correct in that homosexual equality and religious liberty are irreconcilable and in that a gain for homosexual rights is a loss for the rights of Bible-believing Christians.
HOLLYWOOD DARLING, JULIA ROBERTS, TO PLAY IN MOVIE GLORIFYING NEW AGE MYSTICISM (Friday Church News Notes, February 12, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from Lighthouse Trails, Jan. 28, 2010: “This August a new film, starring one of Hollywood’s most popular actresses, Julia Roberts, will be released. The movie, Eat, Pray, Love, is based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoirs of the same name. Gilbert’s book hit the New York Times Best Seller list after becoming well known through Oprah’s ardent promotion, in which Oprah calls the book, the modern woman’s Bible. Oprah says that Gilbert is everybody’s guru. The book follows Gilbert in her spiritual journey, which takes her to an Indian Ashram and to a life of meditation. No doubt, with Julia Roberts playing Gilbert, actor Brad Pitt producing the film, and Oprah most certainly promoting the movie, tens of millions of viewers could be drawn toward Eastern religious outlook. Eat, Pray, Love is one of a number of films over the last few years that have had a strong eastern mystical content. A note of interest to illustrate the paradigm shift that organized Christianity is going through: Anne Lamott, who was just featured in Charles Stanley’s In Touch magazine, endorsed Eat, Pray, Love, the book, and has gone on speaking engagements with Elizabeth Gilbert, expressing her resonance with Gilbert’s spirituality, calling the book ‘rich in spiritual wisdom.’”
THE EVOLUTIONARY INQUISITION (Friday Church News Notes, February 12, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from William Dembski, The Design Revolution, pp. 304, 305: “As Michael Behe pointed out in an interview with the Harvard Political Review for a biologist to question Darwinism endangers one’s career. ‘There’s good reason to be afraid. Even if you’re not fired from your job, you will easily be passed over for promotions. I would strongly advise graduate students who are skeptical of Darwinian theory not to make their views known.’ ... Doubting Darwinian orthodoxy is comparable to opposing the party line of a Stalinist regime. ... Overzealous critics of intelligent design regard it as their moral duty to keep biology free from intelligent design, even if that means taking extreme measures. I’ve known such critics to contact design theorists’ employers and notify them of the ‘heretics’ in their midst. Once ‘outed,’ the design theorists themselves get harassed and harangued with e-mails. Next, the press does a story mentioning their unsavory intelligent design associations. (The day one such story appeared, a close friend and colleague of mine mentioned in the story was dismissed from his research position at a prestigious molecular biology laboratory. He had worked in that lab for ten years. ... Welcome to the inquisition.”
NON-ESSENTIALS? (Friday Church News Notes, February 12, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is from the late H. A. Ironside’s commentary on Daniel: “I have heard Christians refer to certain precepts in the Scriptures as non-essentials. But we may rest assured there are no non-essentials in our Bibles. ‘The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.’ When people talk of non-essentials in regard to anything concerning which God has revealed His mind, it is well to ask, ‘Essential or non-essential to what?’ If it be a question of the soul’s salvation, undoubtedly the one great essential is faith in His blessed Son, whose finished work alone avails to put away sin and procure peace with God. But if it be a question of what is essential to the enjoyment of communion with God--essential to obtaining the Lord’s approval at the judgment-seat of Christ--then it is well to remember that in everything the believer is sanctified to the obedience of Christ.”
FOLLOWING THE CROWD: WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT THE MAJORITY (Friday Church News Notes, February 12, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The Lord Jesus Christ said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:13-14). This is a warning that the majority in this present world are on the wrong road. The crowd is not in the way of the truth. The majority is wrong. Jesus also said, “Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God” (Luke 16:15).

13:11-14). LATE POPE WHIPPED HIMSELF (Friday Church News Notes, February 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - In a pathetic attempt to draw close to God and complete his salvation by emulating Christ’s suffering, the late Pope John Paul II whipped himself. This is one of the remnants of Rome’s “monastic spirituality.” Her “saints” invented many ascetic and contemplative practices as a means to salvation and spirituality. These are being resurrected today by the emerging church. The pope’s flagellation (also called mortification) was revealed in a new book entitled Why a Saint? by Monsignor Slawomir Oder, the cardinal in charge of the pope’s canonization process. The pope whipped himself from the time he lived in Poland before moving to the Vatican, but there is no basis for self-flagellation in the Bible. It is part of Rome’s desperate search for spirituality apart from know-so personal salvation and the indwelling Holy Spirit. The late Mother Teresa pursued a path of asceticism similar to that of John Paul II, and she called herself the “saint of darkness” because her spiritual life was so desperately empty. Thank God, the only whipping that the believer needs to be concerned about is the one that took place in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago.
EVANGELICAL DIALOGUE (Friday Church News Notes, February 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Dialogue with cults and other religions is a growing phenomenon among “evangelicals.” There was a report on this recently in Christianity Today. In 2004 we had the unsightly spectacle of evangelicals joining hands with Mormons in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. Last weekend Northwood Church in Keller, Texas, participated in a “round robin” interfaith worship forum with local Jews and Muslims. They met at the Jewish synagogue on Friday, January 22, at the Islamic Center on Saturday, and at the church on Sunday. Senior Pastor Bob Roberts said that the goal was to get to know one another and understand one another’s teachings without “minimizing differences” or compromising. We wonder what it is about Judaism or Islam and their bold rejection of Jesus Christ that Pastor Roberts doesn’t understand. In his sermon to the interfaith congregation, Roberts said, “I want to know you. Why? Because you’re seeking after God.” The Bible, on the other hand, says that “there is none that seeketh after God” (Romans 3:11). While expressing great sympathy and understanding toward Christ rejecters, Roberts slammed fundamentalist Christians, lumping them in with the “fundamentalist Muslims” as the great enemies of mankind. He said, “The greatest conflict in the world today is between fundamentalist Christians and fundamentalist Muslims. There has to be a new platform. If we have to all convert to one religion we are never going to get along in this world” (“Christians, Muslims, Jews Worship at Evangelical Megachurch,” Christian Post, Jan. 25, 2010). The average “evangelical” today thinks he can associate with heresy and paganism without injury to his faith, but the Bible says, “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33). I don’t know what text Roberts chose for his Sunday sermon to the interfaith congregation, but I am certain it was NOT 2 Corinthians 5:14-18. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” The apostle Paul preached Christ in the synagogues, but he preached Christ so dogmatically and so boldly that he was kicked out and persecuted. He didn’t seem to be able to master the path of multi-faith harmony. Until the apostle Paul, Bob Roberts and his ilk have learned how to “preach the gospel” inoffensively so they can be friends with the same world that crucified Christ.
BEWARE OF CURT LANDRY (Friday Church News Notes, February 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - On a recent trip to the Philippines I learned that some Independent Baptist pastors there are reading books by “Rabbi” Curt Landry. He is a converted Jew who has chosen the heretical path of radical charismaticism. His believes in “prophetic signs and wonders,” which refers to the nonsense that goes by the name of the miraculous in the charismatic movement (such as “spirit slaying,” “private prayer language,” and “personal prophesying”). Landry is closely associated with the deceiver T.L. Osborn, who claims that it is God’s will that every Christian “enjoy physical health” and “material abundance” (Receive Miracle Healing, p. 77). Osborn says that if you exercise faith “you will manage millions of dollars ... you will live like royalty and have everything you ever desire” (The Power of Positive Desire, pp. 15-17). When Daisy Osborn was diagnosed with cancer, she claimed healing and even professed that she was healed, but she died of cancer (The Quarterly Journal, Personal Freedom Outreach, July-Sept. 2000, p. 15). Curt Laundry and his fellow charismatic “prophets” are described in 2 Timothy 3:13 -- “deceiving and being deceived.” The Bible says to avoid such false teachers, and it is dangerous to disobey God’s Word in this matter.
ANOTHER INDEPENDENT BAPTIST CHURCH SUCCUMBS TO THE CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY (Friday Church News Notes, February 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Contemporary Christian Worship music is spreading across all denominational lines, and when it enters a church it brings more than a change in music. It brings a worldly philosophy of Christianity and a gradual lowering of all standards of morality and doctrine. The late Gordon Sears, who had an evangelistic music ministry for many years and ministered with Rudy Atwood, was saddened before his death by the dramatic change that was occurring in many fundamental Baptist churches. He warned, “When the standard of music is lowered, then the standard of dress is also lowered. When the standard of dress is lowered, then the standard of conduct is also lowered. When the standard of conduct is lowered, then the sense of value in God’s truth is lowered.” We can see the fulfillment of this warning on every hand. Consider New Testament Baptist Church in Miami, Florida. It used to be a fundamental Baptist church. Pastor Dino Pedrone was a regular speaker at Tennessee Temple Baptist College in Chattanooga when I was a student there in the 1970s. He was a separatist then, used only the King James Bible and sacred music, had dress standards, and preached against rock & roll. But that’s all gone. The church was renamed The Gathering Place. Today it promotes the viewing of R-rated movies, recommends books by emerging church leaders who reject the infallibility of the Bible, such as Chris Seay, and feeds its youth a steady diet of rock & roll entertainment. The church’s youth program, called YouthForce Dade, describes itself on the church web site as follows: “Rock the Universe, All-Niters, Ski Trips, Summer Camps, Chubby Bunny, Water Balloons, Break dancing, WWE Wrestling, The Book Of Ross, Worship, Bible Study, Community, Little Debbie Snack Cakes, Madden, X-Box 360, LEE ADMIRAL MAJORS!, Eating Dog Food, Samurai Swords, Paintball, Skillet, Shipwrecked, Videos, Ultimate Frisbee, Man Hunt, And Much More!” Notice that they even have a dab of Bible teaching in the midst of the carnal fun. Jeff Royal, who lives in south Florida, says, “NTBC was once a fundamental church, but obviously it has changed. In my view the change began about ten years ago by allowing CCM to be integrated into the services. I’ve watched it over the years. It’s sad because that’s two churches I’ve personally known to have taken this dangerous path” (e-mail, January 19, 2010).
RECENTLY SETTLED “HATE CRIMES” CASE WILL POSITIVELY IMPACT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN CANADA (Friday Church News Notes, February 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from LifeSiteNews, Dec. 7, 2009: “Gerald Chipeur, the lawyer who represented Pastor Stephen Boissoin, has said that the recent ruling in favor of Mr. Boissoin ‘will have a significant long term positive impact on religious freedom in Canada.’ Pastor Boissoin was exonerated by a Court of Queen’s Bench judge last week after being subjected to the proceedings of the Alberta Human Rights Tribunal for over seven years. The Tribunal had found Boissoin guilty of ‘hate speech’ for having written a letter to the editor of a local newspaper about the homosexualist agenda. But Justice Earl C. Wilson last week ruled the letter Mr. Boissoin wrote to the editor of the Red Deer Advocate on June 17, 2002 on the subject of homosexual-rights curricula in the province’s educational system was not a hate crime but legitimate expression allowed under freedom of speech. ... Chipeur states that the bar has been raised substantially on what may in the future be construed as a violation of the ‘hate’ provisions of human rights laws. ‘The decision established a very high threshold for the conclusion that a publication is in violation of the 'hate' provisions of Alberta’s human rights laws,’ he said. ... ‘While the decision did not strike down Alberta’s ‘hate speech’ laws, it significantly limited the application of such laws. Justice Wilson properly pointed out that a province may not duplicate the federal Criminal Code rules outlawing hate crime.’”
TWO NEW HUMAN SPECIES DISCOVERED (Friday Church News Notes, February 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Two new human species have been discovered, which I have the pleasure of tentatively naming Homo sapiens shortisis and Homo sapiens tallisis. I can do this because I have been carefully studying the methods of paleoanthropologists, who have often named new species on the basis of minor differences in cranial shape, teeth, and stature. Usually we have to be satisfied with an artist’s fanciful conception of how the various human species looked, but in this case we have the advantage of possessing a photograph of the two standing side by side on a recent photo shoot organized by the Guinness World Records in Istanbul. This living evidence should be a great benefit for science, which heretofore has had to rely on the questionable fossil record. In fact, we even know the names of the individual representatives of these species. Homo sapiens tallisis is represented by Sultan Kosen of Turkey, and Homo sapiens shortisis, by He Pingping of China. Kosen and Pingping are far more dramatically different from one another than we are to our poor slow-witted cousin Homo sapiens neanderthalensis. Homo sapiens tallisis is over eight feet tall, whereas shortisis is only a few inches over two feet. (Actually, there is another representative of shortisis in Nepal who is exactly two feet tall, which is shorter than my children were at birth.)
SHOULD THE SOUL WINNER ALWAYS “STAY ON SUBJECT”? (Friday Church News Notes, February 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted and adapted from The Technique Catastrophe: An Explanation of the Multitudes of False Professions in the Independent Baptist Movement by Bob Creel (865-712-4537): Most soul winning courses advise the soul winner not to let the recipient move him off subject. If he or she asks a question, the soul winner is taught to reply, ‘That’s a good question and I’ll be happy to answer it for you as soon as you allow me to finish the subject we are on.’ This technique is good if you are planning on a one-sided conversation and the other individual is not allowed to participate. I’ve even heard a lecturer go so far as to say, ‘After you’ve led them to Christ they probably won’t remember that question anyway, so don’t bring it up again.’ Then why did you tell them that you would answer it? Another form of deception? There are often times when obstacles stand in the way of people getting saved, and you would do well to deal with those obstacles in order to move them closer to the cross. Have you ever studied Paul’s approach with Felix in Acts 24:24-25? He reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come. How many Bible subjects could you fit into those categories? Enough to understand that Paul didn’t ‘stay on subject.’ We have no indication that Felix ever got saved, but we do know that the Apostle Paul spoke to him about a variety of subjects. I have more confidence in Paul’s soul winning course than I do in most of the brethren today! When they ask sincere questions it is usually part of the process of ‘counting the cost.’”
