UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA AND HOMOSEXUALITY
June 4, 1997 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - In 1988 the United Church of Canada became the only denomination in Canada to authorize the ordination of homosexuals to the ministry. Since then the number of United Church congregations which welcome "gays and lesbians" into all aspects of church life has steadily grown. These congregations are called "Affirming Congregations," and they offer "covenanting services" which take the place of weddings for homosexuals. Two United Church congregations in Vancouver, British Columbia -- Vancouver Trinity and Vancouver First -- recently voted to becoming "Affirming." Trinity's pastor, Linda Ervin, told the Vancouver Sun newspaper: "Many gays and lesbians are anti-church because they have found the church condemning and inhospitable. In becoming an affirming congregation, we are responding to God's call for justice and reconciliation. We are stating: 'You belong. There is a place for you here." |
