Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - At the recent annual conference of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, newly re-elected president Clyde Glazener warned against “thought police.” He said: “I tend to think (Jesus) is not pleased today by religious folks who become thought police for their followers and dictate their belief patterns, even if they claim to be evangelicals” (“Glazener urges Texas Baptists to seek peace of Christ by breaking down walls of division,” Baptist Standard, Nov. 6, 2000).
The fact is that the Bible tells us there is some policing of thought that is to be done in the churches. Timothy, for example, was instructed to “allow no other doctrine” to be taught at Ephesus (1 Timothy 1:3). That sounds like thought policing to me. Jude 3 demands that we “earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints.” That sounds like thought policing to me. One cannot contend FOR the truth without contending AGAINST error.
