TEXAS BAPTIST LEADER BELITTLES BIBLE
November 12, 2000 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - At the recent annual meeting of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, newly re-elected president Clyde Glazener showed his liberal colors by contrasting the authority of the Bible with that of Jesus Christ. He noted that Texas Baptists love the Bible because it tells us about Jesus, but he went on to say that the Bible is not the highest expression to us from God. Jesus is the highest expression from God (Glazener urges Texas Baptists to seek peace of Christ by breaking down walls of division, Baptist Standard, Nov. 6, 2000). This is a false and dangerous dichotomy. We know that the Bible is not Jesus Christ, but we also know that it is the infallible Word of God and that we do not know anything about Jesus Christ apart from the Bible. The authority of the Bible and the authority of Jesus Christ are one and the same. The Psalmist David understood this, saying, Thou art near, O LORD; and all thy commandments are truth (Psalm 119:151). God and His Word are not to be divided. We know God only through His Word. The man who tries to make a division between the two lowers the authority of both. To say that I can know and honor Jesus Christ apart from the Bible is to open the way to false christs. WORSHIPPING THE BIBLE I dont know any fundamentalists who worship the Bible in a literal sense. They dont bow down to it or burn incense and candles before it. They do give it the honor that God has demanded, though, and that honor is exceedingly high. Psalm 138:2 says thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. The Word of God is magnified above Gods very name! Instead of making a pious-sounding dichotomy between the two, it is obvious that men are to magnify Gods Word as much as they honor His glorious name. Psalm 119:48 says, My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved· Here we see that the Psalmist actually lifted up his hands unto the Scriptures. That almost sounds like worship to me! I had rather follow the example of the godly Psalmist of old than that of a Baptist leader today who has been deluded by his modernistic education. |
