September 27, 1999 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - Promise Keepers holds weekly meetings at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Lakeland, Florida. This is further evidence of the close connection between Promise Keepers and Rome. Lakeland is my hometown, and I personally saw this meeting advertised on St. Anthony’s signboard on a recent visit with my relatives. I also called St. Anthony’s and spoke with a representative of the church. I was told that their weekly Promise Keepers meetings are connected with the national Promise Keepers organization and that the group is scheduled to attend the Promise Keepers conference at the Tropicana Dome soon. The meetings are led by John Angel, who works at St. Anthony’s.

Promise Keepers deceptively claims that they invite Roman Catholic participation only to win them to Christ. In reality, one of the directors of Promise Keepers is a Roman Catholic, and Catholic priests have spoken at Promise Keepers meetings.

The Catholics who attend the Promise Keepers meetings at St. Anthony’s obviously will not be told that the Roman Catholic Church preaches a false gospel. They will not be informed that many Roman Catholic dogmas are abominations before God. They will not be instructed to leave the Catholic Church.

Two of my sisters attend an independent Baptist church in north Lakeland, only a few miles from St. Anthony’s. Interestingly, one of the deacons in that church was once an active member of St. Anthony’s. He was saved after someone explained to him the gospel of the free grace of Jesus Christ, and he and his wife are now members of that Baptist church. He testifies that he never heard the true gospel at St. Anthony’s. The only thing he was taught was Catholic sacramentalism.

Our article "The Promise Keepers - Roman Catholic Connection" documents the close relationship between these two organizations.
