October 15, 2000 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - The following is another edition of Way of Life Literatureās Persecution Watch, which is published to encourage prayer and vigilance on the part of Bible-believing Christians:
LAOS
The following is from Religion Today, August 2, 2000 --
Christians in Laos are being forced to sign an official document renouncing their faith. The penalty for refusal to sign is "an indeterminate time of harsh imprisonment under extremely difficult and squalid conditions," according to the World Evangelical Fellowship, which has received several copies of the document.
Laos' repressive and secretive Communist regime last year declared Christianity the "number one enemy of the state," a WEF spokesman said. "There are currently about 60 Christian prisoners in Laos."
The document states that "imperialists" and "enemies" of the country -- meaning foreign mission agencies from the West -- have planted this "foreign religion" in Laos, WEF reported. It states that the missionaries planted "lies and allurements," but that now the signer and his family "clearly see these intentions of the enemy, and regret the deeds which we have committed. We have clearly seen the goodness of the Party and the Government."
