December 12, 1998 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - I was encouraged to be an American yesterday and today because of the actions of the Republicans in the House Judiciary Committee in voting four articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton. While driving from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Columbus, Ohio, I listened to live broadcasts of the congressional committee hearings pertaining to Clinton's wrong doings. On one side were the Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee. On the other side, the Democrat members of that same committee. I listened carefully and prayerfully to the debates from both sides of the committee. The difference was as great as the difference between light and darkness.
I am not one to get very excited about politics, for the simple reason that politics is the art of compromise, and I believe the Christian's duty, rather, is the practice of non-compromise. I also do not believe the Republicans are the saviors of America, for the simple fact that they do not represent a truly consistent biblical stand for truth and justice. Having said that, though, I will hasten to add that the Republican party is many times better for America than the Democratic party, and the difference between the parties was never plainer than in these committee hearings.
The following is what I heard from the Democratic side: Deception, obfuscation, cowardness, silliness, strawmaning, irrationality, unreasonableness, patheticness, hostility, and putting personal and party political gain above truth and constitutional duty.
The following is what I heard from the Republican side: Truth, justice, honor, reasonableness, bravery, discernment, wisdom, fairness, putting truth and constitutional duty above personal and party political gain. For example, when Republican California representative James Rogan was asked by the media why he was not voting according to the "will of the people" as represented by the polls, he replied: "I took an oath to the constitution, not to my own re-election." Amen.
These Republicans are doing a brave thing, and it is encouraging to see bravery in a land increasingly filled with cowards (beginning with the pastors in the churches). The Republicans have endured assaults by vindictive investigations into their lives, assaults by the liberal media, assaults by raging, unintelligible, demogoging Democrats, even assaults by (probably bogus) polling data. In the face of what appears to be a politically unpopular move, they have been willing to fulfill their constitutional duty and vote articles of impeachment against a lying, felonious, injurious president.
I salute, you, Republicans. You have made me happy to be an American today. Whether or not the full House of Representatives upholds the articles of impeachment and whether or not the Senate ultimately holds the President guilty as charged, I still am happy that at least 21 elected representatives withstood the mindless, godless liberal assault and voted in favor of impeaching this wicked President, thus sending a message to the world that there are many Americans who do not believe this is a time for business as usual.
