October 13, 1998 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - Following are some of the responses I received from the Y2K article. (I don't intend to publish the ones which lambasted me and called me ignorant, etc.)

"Dear Mr. Cloud, All I can say is AMEN! I AM a software engineer, and there WILL be problems, but civilization will NOT end, as many of the Y2K prophets of doom predict. I do believe that you could expand in one area of your commentary and that is in regards to fleecing the flock. I have seen time and again Christians running off to purchase things to protect themselves from <insert next predicted disaster here>. Y2K is just another example. We purchase as much of our food as possible in bulk (large family) and are encountering increasing difficulty in obtaining items that we KNOW are in great supply. What we see is an increase in price and an alleged short supply -- mostly due to the sale of Y2K survival kits. What angers me the most about the situation is that there are Christian brothers fleecing Christian brothers, encouraging fear rather than being an encouragement. Keep up the good work."

"Dear Bro. Cloud, I appreciate your information I receive through e-mail. Keep it up!! The short article you had this morning about Y2K is the reason I am writing. I am so thankful you set the situation straight about those who jump on the band wagon of current events and think they have got to leave the word of God to deal with the side tracks of the carnal. What is wrong with preaching the Word of God as it is and leave off going out on a tangent. Thanks for not majoring on Y2K. Titus 2:13"

"Brother Cloud, I have to say AMEN to your article. I believe it is all interesting and maybe even fascinating but I know God's in control. Our church is a small church and we are making plans to move from our rented building. I don't know if the Lord will lead us to new construction, or rebuild another structure to meet our needs. But until the Lord returns, we will press on with what He has given us to do. And that doesn't include worrying about tomorrow. I've read the end of the book, I'm looking forward and upward. Preach On Brother."

"Thank you thank you thank you!!! You are so right about this! I don't think I have ever been in more agreement with you as I am this morning after reading this article! I have some Christian friends that have gone off the deep end over this issue, and they are wasting money hand over fist on extra food, water supply, generators, etc. etc. They are NOT exercising much faith in the Lord, they are operating on fear, and God has not given us a spirit of fear! I work in engineering, and deal with computers all day long, and I think it's interesting that those I know who are fearing Y2K really don't know a lot about the computer industry. You mention that it's wrong for pastors to go off on this tangent, and you are right. But something else that you neglected to mention is that in the end, I believe many of these Christians who are going into a survivalist mode are going to be looking foolish when it all is over. That will damage their witness, mainly because they put their faith in themselves and not God. I don't know too many non-Christians who are concerned over this issue, only Christians who profess a belief in a God who promises to provide all their needs. Isn't that odd??"

"I'll add to your AMEN's! I am a computer operations manager in city government. I take care of some 100 systems along with their associated networks and have been in this line of work for over 12 years. 'Most' of the Y2k scare is bunk. I seriously question the motives of Christians (or so-called) involved with the hype. I've shared what you have shared with numerous others and they agree with you as well. Thank you for a level headed statement on this matter. Another one I enjoyed reading was the article in Media Spotlight by Al Dager in which he consulted a well known expert in computers. Y2k may be a headache for programmers and systems analysts like myself but its not the end of the world.... yet! :) --- Now if the Lord returns Dec 31st, 1999 at 11:59 p.m. that could be interesting!"
