May 1, 1997 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC), composed largely of homosexuals, was admitted to the Southern California Ecumenical Council in February. The Metropolitan Community Churches was founded in 1968 by Troy Perry, formerly a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. The UFMCC claims to have 330 congregations with more than 30,000 members. The Dallas branch of the UFMCC, Cathedral of Hope Metropolitan Community Church of Dallas, dedicated a $13 million-dollar building in February 1993.

In 1982 the UFMCC's application for membership to the National Council of Churches in America and the Southern California Ecumenical Council was rebuffed. Fifteen years later, on February 13, 1997, it was received by the latter with no dissenting votes.

When the National Council of Churches considered the UFMCC's application for membership at its meeting in November 1982, the debate lasted four and one-half hours. When the vote was finally tallied, angry homosexuals took over the microphones. Nancy Wilson, ecumenical officer of the Metropolitan Community Churches, declared: "It's easier to get into heaven than into the NCC." Later the UFMCC published a statement which said: "The NCC and its member communions are contributing to a climate of hatred and rejection of gay men and lesbians by their actions today."
