September 30, 2000 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) - On September 19 I published ãF.B.F. Committed to Modern Versions,ä documenting the Fundamental Baptist Fellowshipâs commitment to modern Bible versions that contain doctrinal corruptions and that omit large portions of Scripture. We noted that the F.B.F. national meeting is scheduled next year at the First Baptist Church of Troy, Michigan, pastored by Mike Harding. Evangelist Paul Freeman wrote to Pastor Harding to query about his position on the text. Here is the answer verbatim that Evangelist Freeman received from Pastor Harding: ãWe do use the New American Standard in our pulpit, and we are fundamentalists, and we are not ashamed. If you will read the enclosed book, From the Mind of God to the Mind of Man, I think you will be enlightened as well. Sincerely, Pastor Mike Harding.ä

After publishing this, I received two or three e-mails from pastors who challenged its accuracy. Following is one of these:

ãBro. Cloud, I have an assistant pastor friend in Michigan who talked with Mike Harding about your article, and he told him that they sell the NASV in theÊ bookstore, and may mention what it says in Sunday School, but he denies that they use it in the pulpit.Ê Is he lying, or is Evangelist Freeman incorrect? Thanks so much for your workä (Pastor Mark Montgomery, Ambassador Baptist Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).

I wrote to Evangelist Freeman about this, and the following is his reply that I received on September 29:

ãDear Brother Cloud, I have read your 9/28 E-mail reports from men who are questioning Pastor Mike Hardingâs truthfulness. I did not solicit a reply from him. I had sent him a copy of my article on the NASV. He chose to reply to enlighten me. He also sent me a copy of ÎThe Mind of Godâ book. I had already read that book twice and made extensive notes on the mis-information contained in it. I have his original letter to me on the letterhead of First Baptist Church of Troy. He states as follows -- ÎWe do use the New American Standard in our pulpit, and we are fundamentalists, and we are not ashamed.â The letter is dated May 22, 2000. I assume that this is going to create a lot of feedback from the FBF membership, and it should. For years they have allowed BJU to promote the NASV while using the KJV in their pulpits. Now one of their own has taken his stand boldly for the NASV in his pulpit and they are going to be running for cover. The Mind of God book makes clear that the NASV is the most accurate translation. If it is indeed [in their minds] the best, why not use it in their pulpits? Why should they backtrack on their statements? Sincerely in Christ, Paul Freeman.ä

CONCLUDING NOTE FROM BRO. CLOUD: Dr. Donald Waite has published a reply to the errors contained in the book ãFrom the Mind of God to the Mind of Manä which was written by Bob Jones University teachers and graduates. Dr. Waite's book is aptly titled Fundamentalist Mis-Information on Bible Versions. It deals with 118 issues involving misinformation disseminated through this book on the topic of Bible texts and translations. Some teachers at Bob Jones, Central Seminary, and elsewhere deny that the Received Greek New Testament underlying the King James Bible and all of the other Reformation Bibles for the last 500 years is the preserved Word of God. Instead, they have adopted modern textual criticism and therefore believe the King James Bible is corrupted in hundreds of passages. Dr. Waite refutes these serious errors that are growing among ãscholarlyä fundamentalists. 135 pages, 5X8, perfect bound.
