May 25, 2000 (Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org) -- The following report is from Pastor Arthur Houk, Liberty Baptist Church, Long Beach, California [ahouk@juno.com]:

WELL KNOWN SOUTHERN BAPTIST PASTOR SPEAKS FROM THE PLATFORM OF THE BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE IN SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI, AT THE JUBILEE (50 YEARS) GRADUATION FELLOWSHIP

The date was Tuesday, May 16, in the well attended evening service. The Southern Baptist Convention pastor was Dr. Jerry Falwell, and he spoke from the platform for approximately six minutes. He presented a plaque to Dr. John Rawlings of Florence, Kentucky, honoring him as the outstanding Baptist pastor of the 20th century. The Center for Ministry Training at Liberty University, Lynchburg, Virginia, had chosen Dr. Rawlings for this recognition. Liberty University is approved by the Southern Baptist Convention.

My wife and I were in attendance and witnessed Dr. Falwell’s presentation. Nothing was said on Tuesday, May 16, concerning his endorsement of the ecumenical evangelist, Dr. Billy Graham. Nothing was said concerning the fact that Dr. Falwell is a pastor in the Southern Baptist Convention. Nothing was said of Dr. Falwell’s endorsement of Promise Keepers.

My own personal opinion is that, in the future, other Southern Baptist Convention pastors and leaders will speak from the platform of the Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO. I would certainly hope that the trustees of Baptist Bible College would prove me wrong, by issuing a public statement that no Southern Baptist Convention pastor or leader will ever speak from the Baptist Bible College platform again.

A large thermometer chart was to the right of the platform of Baptist Bible College showing that the goal was to receive in pledges one million dollars for the college. They surpassed their goal as over two million was pledged.

The college was extremely hospitable to those who attended the Jubilee Graduation Fellowship. They supplied golf carts with drivers to take the guests from the parking lot to the W. E. Dowell Fieldhouse where the meetings were held. The grounds were bright with many colorful flowers. Dr. W. E. Dowell, one of the founders, was present and sitting on the platform Wednesday evening, May 17.

My wife and I have a daughter who graduated from BBC and a son who attended. Our earnest prayer is that BBC will remain true to the principles of the founders and do as we read in Jude 3, "…earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."
