Do we baptize in the name of the Trinity or in the name of Jesus only?
First, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself taught us to baptize in the name of the Trinity (Matthew 28:19). Note that we are to baptize in the name of, singular, and not in the names of, plural. This means that we do not baptize three times but only once. There is only one God and there is only one salvation experience, meaning the new birth.
Why, then, are baptisms in the book of Acts in the name of Jesus (Acts 2:38; 8:16)?
1. Though the book of Acts does not mention the full name of the Trinity in the baptisms, this does not mean it was not used. It would have been presumption on the part of the apostles had they refused to obey Christs command in Mat. 28:19.
2. The book of Acts is not giving the baptismal formula but is emphasizing the essential symbolism of baptism, which is the sinner being identified with Jesus Christ. In Acts 19:3-5 we see that to be baptized in Jesus name means to believe on Him.
